Shawn riggans is the first catcher we signed that actually intrigues me. guy hasn't lived up to his potential as a hitter and I believe if he were to get at bats he might be the best catcher we got coming into the season, with Thole still learning how to catch.

On my way to work. Metro system is in a ridiculous state. Was listening to traffic reports and they warned drives to keep an eye out for lanes that ended abruptly in snowbanks. What the hell?

This is making me feel old, the majority of the US hockey team is younger than I am. Most of the players were born after the Miracle On Ice took place.

Just finally made it into work. Took an hour and fifteen to get in from Capital Hill, three miles away.

I started feeling that way after we got Brendan Shanahan.....He was the first player in any sport that I was older than...A little bit of me died inside.

haha, bengals never learn.
ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports free agent WR Matt Jones has chosen to sign with the Bengals over the Titans.
The opportunity was simply better in Cincy, where only a fading Laveranues Coles and a disappointing Andre Caldwell stand in the way of a starting job. Contrary to popular belief, Jones hasn't been a deep threat as his body has filled out. He is a big target, though, and a possession receiver for Carson Palmer. His addition could make it easier for the Bengals to target a tight end in the first round of the draft. Feb. 12 - 11:43 am et
Source: Chris Mortensen on Twitter
ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that free agent Pacman Jones worked out for the Bengals on Thursday.
The last we heard from Pacman he had sabotaged his chances of playing in the CFL with a rambling, insult-laden diabtribe on UStream in September. The Bengals have proven time and again, however, that they don't factor "character" into personnel decisions. It's no coincidence that Pacman worked out on the same day that Cincy offered a contract to troubled receiver Matt Jones. The Bengals have also been linked to Donte' Stallworth. Feb. 11 - 11:10 pm et

*Maybe* I could deal with getting yelled at if I really screwed up.. I can take the bullet for a boss if he screwed up and needed someone to blame, I've done it before.. But I could not sit there to take the blame for the boss AND get yelled at as if it was my fault. I would have no control over the synapses in my braining firing off a verbal tirade that would make vagrants and gentlemen blush alike.

I have a friend who quit her job because her boss used to throw things. He threw a glass of water at her. I've only had one boss that was really bad. But I was miserable working for him.

How is that stuff even pass nowadays? I used to work at a fund (as a consultant) where the controller would freak out and break his keyboard like twice a month when he got angry. It was so frequent that IT stocked extras solely for him. That said he wouldn't direct his anger right at someone even if they did fuck up. Everyone liked him too...

Well, I've never worked with or near anyone who threw things at people. But I have worked on a trading desk or two. Breaking things was very common. Phones, keyboards, that sort of thing. SOme of them yelled at people pretty routinely. But they were good people. Not cruel.
But I had one boss who had a terrible temper. Very arbitrary and volatile. He was awful. And a little crazy, I think.

WHISTLER, British Columbia -- A men's Olympic luge slider from Georgia sustained life-threatening injuries during a training run Friday morning at the Whistler Sliding Center, the impact sending him over the wall of the track.
Officials said Nodar Kumaritashvili lost control of his sled, went over the wall of the track and appeared to hit a steel pole near the finish line at the Whistler Sliding Center.
Rescue officials rushed to the scene and were performing chest compressions as well as mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Kumaritashvili was lifted into an ambulance. An air-rescue helicopter was summoned and was in the area over the track about eight minutes after the crash.
International luge officials did not have an immediate update on his condition. Members of the International Luge Federation were quickly called into a briefing.
It was unclear how fast Kumaritashvili was going at the time of the crash, although many sliders have reached speed in excess of 90 mph on the track, which is considered to be the fastest in the world -- and has had several Olympians questioning how safe it truly is in recent days. More than a dozen athletes have crashed during Olympic training.
Kumaritashvili competed in five World Cup races this season, finishing 44th in the world standings.

Mets #2 most valuable brand in baseball, #9 in the world

2. New York Yankees, $266m
3. Real Madrid, $245m
4. Dallas Cowboys, $208m
5. Bayern Munich, $200m
6. Arsenal, $195m
7. Milan, $175m
8. Barcelona, $170m
9. New York Mets, $159m
10. Boston Red Sox, $157m
fwicg...
Quote:
The Mets have the ninth most-valuable sports brand in the world, and the second most-valuable brand in baseball, at an estimated value of $159 million, according to Forbes Magazine.
“The important thing to note here is that the numbers are Forbes calculations of the brand value alone, not the complete value of any team, athlete, event or business,” they explain. “It’s all about branding.”
The Yankees are the most valuable brand in baseball, worth $266 million, while the Red Sox check in at third, just $2 million behind the Mets.
…this is impressive, considering, when i asked people to identify the team’s brand last fall, the responses were about 90 percent negative… this is also good news, in that if the Mets can just start winning again, it will not take much to re-direct the franchise to a more profitable, popular position…

Yeah, Shea. The brand value is trying to get at name recognition, marketing power. That kind of thing.
Mets ranking that high I guess would be driven by the massive NY market, the number of fans and the age of the franchise, the value of baseball teams as brands in general.
Nothing to do with the stadiums, the contracts, the media revenue, etc. - which would cost $billion.

Toyota (TM) hired ex-government regulators to kill at least four investigations into problems with its cars in the U.S. That's the conclusion of an investigation by Bloomberg. The news service reports that, "Christopher Tinto, vice president of regulatory affairs in Toyota's Washington office, and Christopher Santucci, who works for Tinto, helped persuade the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to end probes including those of 2002-2003 Toyota Camrys and Solaras, court documents show. Both men joined Toyota directly from NHTSA, Tinto in 1994 and Santucci in 2003. "

Maybe if they put a padded wall running along the inside of those beams it may have induced a glancing blow where the energy is dispersed over a larger area of the wall and his body. You're probably right that putting padding on the beams themselves may have not been enough

WUTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT. no no no
There is a growing belief new Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov is interested in hiring Jerry Colangelo as president with the hope that he could bring Mike Krzyzewski as GM and coach.
Krzyzewski has turned down overtures from the NBA before, with Boston, Los Angeles and Portland amongst the most notable situations.
The Colangelo relationship, autonomy and unlimited resources Prokhorov would provide might finally lure Krzyzewski away from Duke.
.
To understand the unpredictability of James' decision, look at the New Jersey Nets, who sometime this spring will be purchased once and for all by Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov. Over the last two months, I've heard the well-reported rumor that Raptors president Bryan Colangelo could be a candidate to run the Nets for Prokhorov. When I recently ran this speculation past a well-connected Eastern executive, he told me I was focusing on the wrong Colangelo.
"It's not Bryan," this insider said. "It's Jerry."
A Western GM has since told me that Jerry Colangelo is indeed being whispered as a candidate to manage the Nets going into this summer.
Right now, the Nets are run by team president Rod Thorn, who is as sharp as any executive in the league. Never forget that Thorn pulled off the 2001 miracle of turning the Nets from laughingstock into two-time NBA finalist. Prokhorov would reveal a fine grasp of the NBA if he were to retain Thorn, who, with GM Kiki Vandeweghe, has created a promising future of cap space and a high lottery pick to join a young core led by point guard Devin Harris and center Brook Lopez.
But no one will be surprised should the new owner want to build an entirely new organization in light of the Nets' 4-48 record and all of the tangential messiness surrounding them this season. In that case, a move to hire Jerry Colangelo would seem the ideal alternative...
...So how does this relate back to LeBron? Consider this scenario: The Nets hire Colangelo, who then -- yes, this is almost too good to be true -- tries to hire his Olympic coach, Mike Krzyzewski, to a big-money deal as coach and GM. Now think about what will happen if the Nets win the lottery rights to draft Kentucky point guard John Wall, liberating them to trade the 26-year-old Harris for extra cap space or an existing star. Colangelo and Kryzyzewski could meet with James on July 1 and offer him a max deal, an elite point guard in Wall and an emerging frontcourt star in Lopez, as well as an opportunity to tap into the world's largest market when the team moves to Brooklyn in 2012-13 as the renamed New York Nets.
