I have no problem with Mattews taking over as the 4th OF while Pagan is starting for Beltran. Especially if the Angels are paying most of his contract. I don't think any of the FA options were any better.

From the general discussion:
If it's stokes this isn't even a lateral move, it's a step back. Sign ND if you need a no hit backup outfielder. I'm fine with that and you don't give up Stokes who is relatively young and MIGHT get his shit together.
I would have preferred Endy as well. That would have been a more creative move. But I can say one thing for this trade, and for a lot of the smaller annoyances of this season. With the exception of Cora I can't think of a move that has seriously constrained us in time or money for the future. Even Francouer didn't get the extension that we all worried about.
Omar has been less than brilliant, but the lame duck handcuffs that he has on has also prevented him from making any massive mistakes that we'll be paying for in seasons to come. I'm excluding Bay from this, since I believe he was the best among a limited set of options. And overpaying was going to be the only way to sign him.
Omar has done virtually nothing to improve the team. But he hasn't materially hampered his inevitable successor from making smarter moves. So I'm not irate at this move.

I really think, come breaking camp, that Stokes was going to be the odd man out cause of what he couldn't do, get lefties out. Sean Green has more potential but stokes is more consistent. Potential wins out for me this deep in the pen to start the yr.
Gary Matthews better be coming free

Hairston had better numbers and would have been cheaper than GMJ and required no trade. Also much more versatile. Could play infield and outfield. But I guess Hairston wasn't old enough, used up enough or fading fast enough for Omar's taste. It has nothing to do with Stokes. Omar....you stink.
