This morning on WFAN’s Boomer & Carton Show, which airs weekdays at 6 am, host Craig Carton said he talked yesterday to the Mets, as well as with Carlos Beltran’s people, and people in the medical community, and the following, in his words, ‘is exactly what happened,’ it is ‘the truth,’ and these are ‘indisputable facts.’

Carton said Beltran told the Mets in November he was again having an issue with his knee, which he noticed when increasing his off-season workouts.

Dr. Steadman is the premier knee doctor in the country, according to Carton, “He went to the one guy everybody goes to.”

Steadman talked to Dr. Altchek, the Mets team physician, who conferred with Steadman that having Beltran wait and continue to rehab was not the appropriate answer.

According to Carton, Beltran had roughly 25 pieces of loose cartilage in the knee, ‘and it had to be taken out,’ and all sides agreed that having arthroscopic surgery was the best solution.

Carton explained, “When they finally get to Jeff Wilpon and Omar Minaya and the rest of the Mets brass, they wanted a couple of days to confer with Dr. Altchek and Dr. Steadman to decide if they agreed surgery was the only answer to this situation. Apparently, in the course of the Mets talking about it, Dr. Steadman told Beltran, ‘There is no reason for your to wait, you need to get this done.’”

He continues, “Now, Wilpon and Minaya are out in Arizona at the Owners Meetings all week, so Steadman, not Scott Boras, gets in touch with the Mets, because he’s not allowed to operate on Beltran without the Mets blessing. The Mets sent over to Dr. Steadman the workmen’s compensation papers, which allow him for insurance reasons, to actually do the operation. So, the doctor goes, ‘I have an opening at 7:00 am, we’ll get you in first thing.’”

Carton says the Mets claim they didn’t know on Tuesday that Beltran was going in for surgery at 7 am on Wednesday. However, Omar Minaya knew, because, according to Carton, “Beltran called Minaya out of respect and said, ‘Listen, all the doctors are on board here, I’m gonna have this done and why wait, I want to get back as soon as possible,’ and Omar said, ‘I’m with you, good luck, let us know how it goes.’”

In the end, Carton believes, ‘There is now a major problem between Beltran and the Mets.’

Right. Beltran, did nothing wrong. Steadman and the Mets rep he spoke to slipped up in the chain of command. A little bit. If the story hadn't leaked before the Mets could release it formally, I doubt that we would have heard a thing about it. My guess is that someone got to the Wilpons or someone similarly positioned before they were informed that the surgery had actually occurred. They blurted out, "I don't know anything about that" or denied it. Then they have a stupid controversy that they handle idiotically.

I hope they hold a real press conference and defuse all of this, preferably by admitting that after getting a complete understanding of the situation, they would have had no problems signing an official clearance for the surgery and that it is the best thing for Carlos and team. Of course, we have only his health and the best interests of the team as a major concern, blah, blah blah. . .

Honestly, if the scoping works out, I think Beltran will be good in CF for a year. The problem is that, eventually, he's going to need that knee scoped every year, with the degenerative condition.

Better PR is a must. But I don't blame Horowitz. The problem is that the mouthpieces (Omar and the Wilpons) are so inept. Unless they hired three people and handcuffed them to each guy, this stuff would happen.

I blame Omar. It's his job to be the rational, quick on his feet and think a few steps ahead. He's too reactive and his initial reactions are frequently in the wrong direction. There isn't a PR organization in the world that can compensate for that kind of liability at the top.

Maybe the compromise is to hire a very high ranking person - needs to be seen as Omar's left hand - and let them do the majority of the talking. If that person had strong PR instincts, we'd avoid some of this.

I agree Ed but we shouldn't be patting Bab for increasing the loan-loss reserve. It should have bee adequeate the entire time, it's part of the reason for the mess (referring to banks in general not Bab specifically) It's interesting that lending went up big in the 4th quarter because that is definitely not the line they're parroting out there


Increasing reserves means the impact to the firm if defaults rise will be lessened. Makes the bank stronger.
They should be patted for increasing lending, and adding jobs and working to lessen forclosures.
But instead, the story is primarily about bonuses and how evil it is that bonuses are high.

Tell the whole damn story. The framing is frustrating, because all it does is increase animosity among the public. People see "banks giving out huge bonuses", and think every person is getting millions.
BaB has over 200,000 employees worldwide. Of course the compensation pool is high, that's a lot of fucking people to pay.

Ed, there are many people/institutions/corporations responsible for the current economic problems..... I understand that BaB has made great strides in the last 6 months or so. I don't understand all the nuances nor the inner workings of a bank, so perhaps I'm the ideal person to comment ( because I'm like the majority of Americans, I would guess.) So my comment is based on the following....I'm supposed to applaud you for doing what you should have been doing all along? I guarantee that's most Americans feelings. I also totally get the bonus structure, but understand most Americans perceptions.
I do feel that financial writers should make things more clear to the average person, but although I love you dearly, I feel little sympathy for BaB.

Never said they should be applauded. Every bank played a role here. Though BaB did a better job than most in regards to risk mitigation.

I'm just tired of the constant bashing.

Heck, I know most people's perceptions, I share many of them. It does piss me off that a lot of the people who made mistakes still have their jobs and are getting big bonuses.

But the way the story is told, it seems like every person who works at a bank is evil and is loaded. And while I know you understand that is not the case, a lot of people do not.

Heck, I've got FAMILY who get on me a bit about it. That really annoys me.
