It honestly could've been anyone ('cept Green or Mota) as long as the corresponding move was "optioned Mejia to AA".

Bobby Parnell! That might be fun. And yes, if it's not Mota that is a good thing.
I was just trying to decide if I would have been willing to take Ollie back in the pen if it meant that Mejia could be sent down. That would certainly be sacrificing today to prepare for the future. The answer is yes, but I would have been pissed! ;-)

Jerry Manuel had lobbied since spring training for Mejia to be included in the major league bullpen, but the 20-year-old rookie’s recent lack of use resulted in the decision to send him to the minors. That will allow Mejia to concentrate more on developing his curveball and changeup.
According to Fangraphs.com, 78 percent of Mejia’s major league pitches were fastballs, 13 percent were changeups and nine percent were curveballs. Mejia ranked fourth among National League relievers in the percentage of fastballs used.
---------------------------------------------
Another American League scout noted that teams are well aware of Mejia’s high-end potential, regardless of where he was assigned.
“No question. We’d love to have him,” he said. “I think everybody knows he’s one of the top prospects. He’s got a lot of value. He would have more value as a starter than a reliever. They did the right thing by sending him out because he needs to pitch.”
Could Mejia have developed just the same even with regular use in the major league bullpen?
“No,” one scout said. “This is better.”
Said another scout: “The problem I have with it is there was no need to do it. At some point in time, it was like throwing Jerry a bone: ‘OK, you can have your one guy’ -- a ‘we’re-not-very-happy-about-this’ type of thing. I mean, there’s the experience of being there, but if they would have done it for a full year, I think they would have lost what kind of pitcher he was. Instead of being a three-pitch-mix guy, he’d end up just blowing by guys, and lose the changeup -- or whatever the case may be. I think they may have caught it in time. Hopefully he gets it to where he can command the fastball again.”.

Fixing Mistakes
Hypothetical scenario: Imagine you’re at a restaurant. You order, let’s say, spaghetti with meatballs and a side salad. When the food comes, your waiter instead presents you with a hamburger. Well, no, that’s not right, and you point out the mistake. The waiter apologizes, and then returns moments later with just spaghetti; no meatballs, no salad. No, still not right, and you point out the mistake again. The waiter returns, but again forgets to bring the salad. Almost there, but not quite, so you once again point out the error. The waiter returns, and on the fourth try brings the entire correct order. Finally.
So now, the hypothetical question: What are you going to tip? Are you going to tip the waiter the same amount you would had he brought the order correctly the first attempt? Are you going to tip him more because he corrected his earlier mistakes?
This is a really easy one, right? I suspect a great deal of people would not give a generous tip in this situation, and I don’t think anyone would tip more than they normally would. I would guess that a majority of people would probably just tip less. The waiter came up with the right combination eventually, but only after a few trials and errors. A waiter really does his job well if he prevents the mistakes from occurring. He probably shouldn’t get extra credit for correcting mistakes he himself created. I think most everyone can agree on that.
This is why I don’t understand why people are congratulating the Mets for correcting mistakes made during their initial roster construction -- and by “people,” I really just mean “me, two months ago, when they designated Mike Jacobs for assignment. (http://www.patrickfloodblog.com/2010/04/and-jacobs-begot-isaac.html)” It’s like watching someone drive their car into a lake, seeing them notice that they have, in fact, driven their car into a lake, and only then do they stop driving any farther into the lake. Then you pat them on the back and exclaim, “Good job! You stopped driving any farther into the lake!” The Mets are fixing mistakes, but they’re fixing mistakes that they made.
Now, every team is likely to make one or two “d’ohs” on the Opening Day roster, but the Mets seem to have made more than their fair share. The Mets made at least six (John Maine, Oliver Perez, Frank Catalanotto, Mike Jacobs, Gary Matthews Jr., and Jenrry Mejia), and possibly a few more if you want to count “not having a bullpen” as an ongoing mistake. They have moved ahead and fixed most of these wrongs, and as the season has progressed, the Mets have continued to improve their roster via subtraction. One one hand, that's a good thing. Unfortunately, this is also generally a sign that someone calling the shots is wearing a pair of Bad Idea Jeans (http://www.hulu.com/watch/10310/saturday-night-live-bad-idea-jeans) -- something is wrong with the organizational philosophy when Plan B keeps succeeding where Plan A fails. The Mets are fixing mistakes, but they’re not fixing the cause of their mistakes.
Take, for example, the recent demotion of Jenrry Mejia. The Mets sent Mejia down because his ability to throw strikes (15 walks against 17 strikeouts) was not consistent enough for him to lock down the eighth inning role as they (or just Jerry Manuel) envisioned. That's the thing: I don’t think the Mets suddenly came to a general agreement that sticking a 20-year-old minor league starter in the major league bullpen to begin the season was a bad idea -- even though, best I can tell, it’s only happened one other time in the modern bullpen era of the past 30 years (Brent Knackert for the Mariners in 1990). The Mets sent Mejia down because he wasn’t very good, not because they decided having him up wasn’t a very good idea. There is a world of difference between the two. One is seeing the problem with the results; the other is seeing the problem with the process. One is just backing out of the lake; the other one is figuring out why you drove into the lake to begin with.
Similarly, the Mets didn’t cut Gary Matthews Jr. because they realized their reasoning behind trading for him was flawed; they cut him because he hit .190. Same for Mike Jacobs, same Oliver Perez. They didn’t see the flawed processes, just the flawed results.
It seems to me that the Mets problem is a lack of faith. A running joke is that certain GMs, notably Omar Minaya and Dayton Moore, repeatedly acquire players from their former organizations -- Sam Page at Amazin’ Avenue mentioned this recently (http://www.amazinavenue.com/2010/6/20/1526765/mets-management-needs-to-start). I suspect what this reflects is that plenty of teams still haven’t embraced ideas like (1) baseball players actually peak and decline earlier than previously thought and (2) minor leagues statistics are the best predictors of major league success. Instead, teams stick to their personal experience -- which, in a way, makes plenty of sense. Most of us trust what we already know and like to stick to our comfort zones. But maybe that’s not always the best plan, particularly for baseball teams. Many of the decisions the Mets made in spring training -- “known” veterans over “unknown” youngsters and career minor leaguers -- seems to reflect this thinking. Maine over Dickey, Perez over Takahashi, Jacobs over Davis, and Catalanotto over Carter. They didn’t have faith in things they hadn’t seen for themselves. And to channel my inner Darth Vader, I find their lack of faith disturbing.
On the other hand . . . the Mets currently have the third best record in the National League. So it’s not that big of a problem, or at the very least, it’s less of a problem this year than in years past. The Mets brought in better options this season; they didn’t use them immediately, but they did bring them into the organization. That’s an improvement of sorts. R.A. Dickey, Hisanori Takahashi, and Chris Carter didn’t just come out of nowhere. The Mets brought them in as depth, and that’s a good thing.
Still, it’s as if instead of ordering just the bad items on the menu as they did in the past -- I apologize for so many restaurant metaphors -- the Mets have moved on to ordering ALL of the items on the menu, but still insist on trying out all the bad ones first. At least the good ones were on the table this time around.
But the Mets are going to keep choosing bad stuff first, until they figure out a better way to separate what’s going to be good from what’s going to be bad, preferably in advance. I don’t know what the answer is. I do know when a majority of bloggers and writers say, “No, what you’re doing with Jacobs/Matthews/Maine/Perez/Mejia is a bad idea,” and they ALL turn out to be bad ideas, maybe it’s time to rethink things. Maybe it’s time to check and make sure no one is wearing Bad Idea Jeans.
Still, the Mets have the third-best record in the NL -- I know, right? How’d that happen? -- so maybe I should put away the hater-ade and just enjoy it.

The case for Milwood (from Fangraphs):
When people talk about the starting pitchers that will be available for trade over the next month, the same names always come up – Cliff Lee, Roy Oswalt, Ben Sheets, and Jake Westbrook lead most of the discussions. However, I’d like to throw another name into the mix, and suggest that he might end up being the best value purchase for a team looking to add a middle of the rotation starter for a few months – Kevin Millwood.
Yes, the same Kevin Millwood who currently has a 5.12 ERA for the Orioles and is due about $5 million for the rest of 2010. That guy and bargain actually go together. Due to the money he’s owed, the runs he’s allowed, and the generally average stuff, Millwood’s not going to be highly sought after. However, he’s pitched pretty well this year, and is quite reminiscent of a pitcher in a similar position a year ago – Carl Pavano.
Like Millwood, teams weren’t beating down the door for Pavano a year ago, despite a very good walk rate and solid strikeout rate. His BABIP was .330 when the Indians finally traded him to the Twins, so while his xFIP was good (3.94), his ERA was not (5.34). Because of this, he was able to get through waivers and be traded after the July 31st deadline, and the Twins just surrendered a PTBNL to get him. Pavano then pitched well for the Twins down the stretch and in the post-season, and has continued his success there in 2010.
Millwood’s xFIP currently stands at 4.17, and even that is inflated a bit from the division he plays in. Four of his starts have come against the Yankees and Red Sox, and in those games, he’s walked 16 and struck out 18. In his other 11 starts, he’s walked 13 and struck out 60. Yes, those games still count, but if he pitched in a less demanding division, his overall numbers would be quite a bit better, and he’d be attracting more attention.
Unless Millwood really turns it on over the next month, he’s unlikely to command much of a return from the team that acquires him. Don’t be surprised if his results magically improve once he gets out of Baltimore, however – the BABIP and HR/FB numbers are bound to regress, and getting him away from the AL East can only help.
For a team that doesn’t want to pay a premium price to acquire pitching help, Millwood may be their best bet.

The Popper quote about the locker room and front office not being happy about Jerry's John Maine comments is interesting. I understand why the FO would get rubbed the wrong way seeing as how John is still on the payroll, but I don't understand why anyone in the LR would give a shit? Every time Maine took the mound it was a disaster. If I were on that team, I wouldn't wanna see him pitch to another batter while in a Mets uniform. I would be very surprised if any player on that team had any confidence in John while he was on the mound this season. How can you play behind a guy like this knowing that more often than not, you will lose the game because Maine will dig a hole too deep to get out of.

A teammate was disrespected. I think that is why the clubhouse is upset with jerry's comments relating to Maine. By all accts, Maine is well liked. I think the revelation by warthen Sunday about what Maine's been going thru to make starts had an effect on me and probably has had an effect on his teammates. Maine is done unless they find something else wrong IMO. It might not be immediate but eventually his velocity will make it be the end

I know my comments are harsh. I'm just looking at it from one perspective. As far as John is concerned, I feel really bad for him. He was one of the lucky few given an opportunity to play baseball for a living and now it might be taken away from him for good. All before the age of 30. It's one thing to chase your dream and never reach it. It's another to catch it, live it, then have it snatched away while still in your prime. I want him to do well, but if he can't, then I don't want him on this team.

One advantadge of getting Milwood is that it means Taka2 can go to the pen. I'm convinced that the more exposure Taka2, the more batters are going to catch up to his funky delivery. Somebody on AA posted these splits of Taka as as starter.

If I'm on that team, I care a lot more about my teammates than the manager. One of the reasons ATL players love Bobby Cox so much is how much he'll get their backs, no matter what. He doesn't throw guys under a bus, even jokingly. Jer has done this a before (Ryan Church anyone?), and players might let it slide once, but for him to do it again (to a guy who's hurt, no less). If it's joking about Ollie it's one thing, Ollie's already a problem child cause his attitude. Maine had no such problems, I know some people don't like Maine, but the guy worked his ass off for the team, and teammates appreciate taht, regardless of performance on the field (see Frenchy).

Nobody deserved a promotion more than Cohoon, who threw three straight complete game shutouts for the Sand Gnats in his last three starts as a Sand Gnat, proving he was too advanced for Low-A hitters—the crafty lefty will skip over St. Lucie and head right to Double-A Binghamton. Mack had an article a few months back that said Wilmer had the potential to have a "retired number" career when all is said and done.
Hes putting up some good numbers but its waay to early to tell. As you can see with my location i'm pulling for the dude. Definitely has a bat worth drooling about.
There was a picture of Beltran looking fat, with a huge ice pack on his knee. Seriously, Carlos needs to shed major poundage or his knees will never be able to take the load.

Big time. Love the comps to Miggy too. But using the phrase "retired number" is really setting the bar a bit high for anyone.

With Mejia in AA, Flores in A+, and Cohoon in AA it will def be fun to follow those two teams. Hopefully Holt can shun his suckiness away at PSL.

He stated that Maine he would be a starter. When asked whether Dickey or Tak would be removed, Jer said that they'd both stay starters. The obvious question was then asked when does Maine pitch then, he said something to the effect of, "On off days."
it was a joke, I'm sure, but you don't joke about one of your players careers like that. It's just not cool.
What's not cool was Maine showing up his coach in the dugout. I liked the Jerry zing. Put Maine in his place a bit. We all hate Jerry but you still don't do that in the dugout. Do it behind closed doors.

Hes currently even to a better year w/ Miggy at age and league. But Flores did have the advantage of playing in Savannah last year.

Jays cut Edwin Encarnacion...
Even though it kinda doesn't make real sense, any time I see someone cut who can play third, I think about replacing Tatis.
Someone make this tossed-off kind of stupid idea real! It is not as stupid as giving Tatis meaningful at-bats.

I could see Cohoon being traded in a deal for a pitcher. If he holds his own over his next 4 or 5 starts I bet he's gone by the deadline.

I like Tatis. He's a valuable pinch hitter and role player. But Encarnacion is better and also has some versatility. Last time I noticed, he was having a pretty good season. I wonder what happened to make the Jays cut him.
EE was batting like .200, that may have done it. his OPS was decent tho

he is having a pretty good season..i'd totally sign him, pending a full physical of course.
lol
Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos does not believe Edwin Encarnacion, who was designated for assignment on Monday, will be claimed off waivers.
"With respect to the performance and the salary of the player, I would say it's unlikely," said Anthopoulos. Ouch. Encarnacion, 27, is batting just .200/.298/.467 over 120 at-bats this season, but nobody will question his power potential. Though he's owed $2.7 million for the rest of the season, it might be worth it for someone to take on his salary in hopes of converting him to the outfield.

He hit 6 HRs in May - I think that is what made me think he was having a good year. He really isn't. And he has been horrible in June.
I'm also surprised to see he hasn't played anywhere other than 3b and a couple of innings at 1B. I know there was talk about moving to a corner OF spot last season, I thought he had actually played there some.
Tough to cut a 27 year old guy with decent power. Maybe he's a headcase. And Toronto gave up Rolen to get him - oops.

We won the Father's Day Tourney. Kids did really well.
Played last night down in Lauderdale and got beat. My son held the other team to 1 run on 3 hits in 4 innings. I was out of pitching cause we played 6 games in three days not counting last night's game. Used a kid that really hasn't thrown for us and he walked 7 in the last two frames and gave up a couple good hits. No biggie.
As I told the kids, we beat some really good teams last week to win a huge tourney. It was worth it. We're now playing in the Districts and if we advance, we go on to States. I knew last night was going to be tough, especially since we had to travel an hour, play at 8:30pm and the kids were still gassed from the weekend.
We play tomorrow night, then Thursday or Friday (depending on where we're seeded). Then it's a bunch of games this weekend.
Thanks for asking :-)

Shit we really are a decent starter away from making a run. Not saying we couldnt now but...even a Millwood eating innings wouldnt hurt. Just dont want it to cost too much.

Only thing is "if" Beltran suffers setbacks and we trade Angel we become screwed cause F! has been underwhelming and J Feliciano full time wont cut it. But maybe in the off-season pending Beltrans return fully complete and F! picking it up some the rest of the way.
yeah...thats why i'm tempted but not quite ready to pull the trigger yet.

My guess is we'll see a Pagan/Frenchy platoon, with Pagan sometimes spelling Beltran in CF to give him some rest.
Yes. This seems most likely to me.

Am I the only dude who likes our staff the way it is now?
Why change it when its been so good?
And why would Pelf and Johan lobby for that change when they have been among its weakest links as of late?
I want bullpen help.

There's a certain amount of risk involved with the Taka, Dickey or Niese. Well there's a certain amount of risk involved with any pitcher, but having another starter and being able to slot Taka back to the pen if needed isn't the worst thing.

if we can get bullpen help and become a shutdown relief pitching team..we coud make do with our starters...barring no major regression from Pelf or further decay of Santana.

Agree. I'm not saying we need Lee. But if we were going into a playoff im not saying Niese wouldnt be a good option as your 3 guy. But I would much rather have him as the 4th. You never know what can happen w/ Taka and Dickey. If its not going to cost much its worth looking into.

Getting bullpen help is very, very expensive - we had to pass on trading for bullpen help in 2007 & 2008 because the price in prospects was too high. OTOH, if we get a starter like Milwood or Westbrook, we could move one on our starters to the pen & add depth that way.
Also, I'm not convinced that Taka2 will sustain his success as a starter -the more he's exposed, the more opposing teams are going to figure out his delivery.

As much as I loved Taka in the starting rotation he would totally bolster the pen. Also I could see them if we are in the playoff hunt in sept. calling up Mejia for some pen help as well.

Milwood and Westbrook are not very good IMO. They would be as likely to tax the pen as anything else.

From what I saw he was improving and was challenging hitters towards right about the time he got hurt. I remember he had a tough time in the beginning but seemed he was turning a corner and becoming a solid 8th inning option.

If you look at Milwood's peripherals, he's really not having that bad a year. What's killing him is the HR ball. He'd get a huge boost from pitching in Citi.

THey really need to figure out a way to trade up 1 spot to grab Turner. Then they can sign David Lee and have a pretty good starting lineup.

The fucked up part about this is that Jerry can't even be counted to use him in a manner which would maximize his talent for retiring LH hitters. He will predominantly throw Igarashi out against RHs so his suckitude is increased due to his manager's incompetence.
cousins is the better player though...
knicks are interested in my boy vasquez. not so sure i like that. i don't wanna come to eventually hate one of my favorite college players ever

They can both give you the same 6 IP per start that you're getting from Taka. And putting Taka in the pen in place of Valdes means you're taxing the rest of the pen less. Neither is likely to match the performance we've gotten from Taka so far, but how likely is it that Taka keeps up this pace anyway?
I don't know if Millwood or Westrook is the right choice, but I would rather get a guy like that cheap and also add an 8th inning guy than spend our prospects and money on a top of the rotation starter. (Of course, first choice is getting a top of the rotation guy cheap, and I'm not giving up on that idea yet)
