Mets center fielder Carlos Beltran underwent minor knee surgery Wednesday, sources connected to the Mets told SI.com.

Beltran will need 8-12 weeks of rehab and is expected to be recovered at or around Opening Day. The Mets begin the season at home vs. the Marlins on April 5.

Beltran missed significant time last season because of a bone bruise behind the right knee cap.

Why don't they ever seem to do these things RIGHT after the season, so that they have the whole off-season to heal?

I mean, these are absurdly rich people. They can get that sort of thing done.

Ugh, why does this always happen to us? Why didn't he have this surgery once we were out of contention? He'd already be ready to go now.

I'll have something up on AA about this in the morning (that is, later this morning). Ted Berg called the news a 'gut punch' (http://www.tedquarters.net/2010/01/13/gut-punch/), which just about sums it up.

Beltran is soft, no amount of surgery fixes that.

i suspect Boras is concerned about Beltran's next contract already and doesn't want to miss a lot of games during the season. surgery in October makes more sense, of course, if you are trying to get ready for 2010. Mets committed big $$$ to Bay and still need a pitcher. Many fans are already wondering if Beltran has a future with the Mets and Boras is a pretty smart sleezeball.

This sucks. Makes me a little sick to my stomach.

But it was Beltran's Colorado specialist who said that he didn't need the surgery last season. Isn't that right, or am I remembering that incorrectly?

My impression was that Carlos wanted to avoid the surgery, if he could. Which makes sense when the words "career threatening" are attached to a procedure. I guess he and his specialist determined that rest wasn't going to cut it after all.

On the other hand, I've been very optimistic about our batboys. They are by far some of the best in baseball.

Haha! That-a-way, Catch! I like your outlook! Isn't our batboy farm system rated in the top handful?
