He did a great job, esp considering that his other arm was getting progressively more and more painful and swollen as the game went on.
Interesting note on Valdes: he was a center fielder until he turned 18, when he was in a pickup neighborhood game and they needed a pitcher. He tried it and liked it. So small wonder he can hit.
Given Jerry's post-game comments about how good he is in the outfield during batting practice, calling him his fifth outfielder, maybe we should let him pinch hit and play CF instead of GMJr when he's not pitching. He's probably better. LOL!

Valdes has the same number of RBIs in 1/8th the ABs and one less XBH.

One of my fave games last night. It all worked. Pitching, fast and efficient...hitting, timely and situational. Little angst.
My kind of game. Is it too much to ask for more from Taka? I just worry who comes in after 6? yikes!

So sad that he got cut.
Thinks the team is preoccupied by what others think.
Hmm. Pot, meet kettle.
Wonder if he's sad that they hit him hard last night?

Yeah so he went to a team that brings up a non-factor opponent in their own WS celebration or that's managed by a guy that brings up the Mets in an interview about sign stealing when the accuser in question was the Rockies. Yup, they don't care what others say about them. I hope he regresses back to his AAAA self, go fuck yourself Figgy.

I wonder if Mrs. Figgy bitching on her blog last year or whatever it was last year didn't sit too well with the Wilps and Omar. Eventually they had to play him when everyone else was dropping like flies. I wouldn't put it past the Mets to hold grudges like that.

The thing that gets me is that it probably wouldn't cost a lot to get better (but still mediocre) production out of an RA Dickey type. They're paying him his $ whether he's with the team or not. It's really about the marginal cost of his replacement that they're not willing to budge on.

I'm a bit confused. Did Figgy say something about the mets?
oh, yes
After spending the past two seasons in Queens, during which he went 6-11 with a 4.28 ERA but gave Jerry Manuel a versatile arm at his disposal, Figueroa believed he had earned a spot on the Mets' pitching staff but was released in the final days of spring training.
Hard feelings? More than a few.
"While it's one person's decision and it's a business, they're shocked when you take it personally. It's hard to not," Figueroa said before the game. "In two years I gave them blood, sweat, tears, my heart and my soul - and it wasn't enough to make the team this year. If I would have cleared waivers, I told them I wasn't signing back....I shouldn't have had to prove that I belonged on this team."
Figueroa, 36, is 1-1 with a 5.09 ERA in eight outings for Philadelphia, a city the Brooklyn-born pitcher is happy to call home.
"To have the rug pulled out from under you, you have to find a way to refocus, and there's no better way than first place," Figueroa said. "This clubhouse is different....They don't panic early in April when we have a two-game losing streak and wonder if the manager is getting fired, or if the GM is getting fired. It's a good feeling to know there will be a tomorrow."
Does he have insight into the Mets' struggles so far this season?
"If I could put my finger on it I would be Jeff Wilpon's right-hand man," Figueroa said. "Somehow (the Phillies) got this group, somewhere along the line, to believe that they could do it and they will do it. They didn't have to force it. Day in and day out, no matter who is on the mound, we believe we're going to win."
And the Mets?
"Everyone worries about, 'Well, what did Jimmy Rollins say?' " said Figueroa, who believes the same drama never follows the Yankees because "when you're winning, people love a winner. When you're the second-best team in your city, there's always drama with that. There's always got to be a story, whether it's a story from within looking for attention somehow."
The Mets may be their own worst enemy at times, but they certainly created one in Figueroa. "When I became the odd man out, I asked why and they said, 'It's just the move we need to make' and thought that would be enough for me to explain it to my family," he said. "That's not enough when you've given your life and been taken away from your family to do this."
For one night, at least, the Mets were grateful he was doing it somewhere else.

I think they are going to cut him eventually. But not until he's had ample time to prove that he is worthless in the pen. And that he isn't going to improve. But if he can't relieve, I think they will do it at some point.

Speaking of Beltran, I'd thought that we'd see things moving very fast once he got to running. I was wrong. If anything, they're moving even more slowly, a real frustration for Mets fans. Even the New York media hasn't found much to report on. He's still jogging, but hasn't really added much to his workload. There's nothing resembling a sprint yet and there's nothing resembling a game on the horizon for Beltran. Sure, he was shifted to the 60-day disabled list, but that was a pure procedural move; the 60 days will be up very soon anyway. Until we see Beltran running hard, making cuts, or 90-degree turns, there's no way to do more than guess at a return. If you're a conspiracy-minded sort, you might wonder if the Mets aren't counting out the games before he's missed 90 days, a common elimination period for disability policies. I don't know whether or not Beltran and his knee have a policy and don't think that's what's going on here. I think it's more likely that the Mets will get to mid-June and decide whether they'll have to make a move, perhaps eating the $20 million in non-deferred money remaining on Beltran's contract.
I dont understand that blurb at all
Jackson, asked about the reports before Tuesday's game, said he "can't imagine" coaching anywhere else and dismissed the possibility of returning to the Bulls. As for the Nets, he finds them intriguing and said he'd "like to have a vodka" with Mikhail Prokhorov (who swears he doesn't touch the stuff).

Me neither. Why would they have to make a move? If they are paying him anyway, what action needs to be taken?
The Will Leitch article implied the same thing and I just don't understand what's left to do, besides wait around.
The very end is what i dont understand at all
what is he insinuating the mets are going to do to get out of the deferred money? i mean he talks about possibly having some disability insurance, but its not clear THAT is related to that very end part.

The problem is that rest may not help with this - the only thing that just might help is microfracture surgery. But if they do that, the Mets lose him not only for this year, but next year as well. So nobody (incl Beltran) wants to do that unless it's totally unavoidable.
More likely, he'll play a few months in pain.

When reached by phone Tuesday, Strawberry declined comment, but he’s let the Mets know he’ll never set foot in the clubhouse again. Darryl was wounded, but was nevertheless able to understand that his message – and the in-your-face delivery of yesteryear – no longer resonate in the new millennium clubhouse. .

The SNY guys discussed this in the booth yesterday. They all seemed to think that Strawberry had - with good intentions - blundered in his message. Both Ron and Keith said that they would never deliver unsolicited criticism and only give advice on request. And that media-types and ex-players who are not in the clubhouse on a regular basis really aren't in a position to comment and that Strawberry's comments were not especially well-informed.

I seem to remember Mex being critical of Piazza (or perhaps the team as a whole) while he was still playing for the Mets and Pizza not appreciating his comments all that much. Said Keith was a "voice from the grave". Made it very clear that he had no interest in hearing anything Hernandez had to say.
That's what I thought of when I heard Keith talk about it last night on the broadcast.

Although the one thing I will miss are the random cases that they solve away from the primary story line. You know that's gone now that they are so heavily invested in the alternate uni now. But I think having the show delve further into the lives of the alternate characters will make this show even more special.

They are going to need to make the alternate characters seem more "human" if you will. Right now there isn't a viewer alive that isn't siding 100% with our beloved regulars. Somehow the writers have to make a case for the alternates and create a sort of conflict within the viewers.

i totally agree
my prediction.....the "others" at some point cross over to ask walter and peter for their help to save their own universe, something will happen and all shit gets even worse on the other side.
perhaps walternate goes full evil and the fringe pplz on the other side turn against him and need help to stop him
walternate seems to have really misled them about the "evilness" of the pplz from our universe. so maybe at some point they discover that's not true at all and start to like our world and become allies or something

Outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis drew praise from a scout who recently watched Binghamton. The scout said Nieuwenhuis, a former running back in high school who was recruited to play college football, has the speed to play center field and the arm to play right field. While the lefty-hitting Nieuwenhuis remains susceptible to curveballs from right-handed pitchers, he’s otherwise closed up a major hole on inside pitches. .

I was also confused by peter telling walter at the end "you crossed universes TWICE to save me" - peter doesnt know about him being sick the first time yet tho, right? no one has told him that yet
When he spoke to Alt-Liv, he said "You two are nothing alike" the mannerisms are different.

Walternate being "evil" is a clue to what Bell said to Walter just b4 they went back home.
"You asked why I did that to you? You asked me to. You didn't like what you were becoming"
I think that means Walter was becoming a tad bad, and taking out those parts of his brain was a way to stop it.
I have some concerns about Bell though. He said he had never met Walternate, but then insinuatated that he is close to him in the alt-verse, designing weapons. Makes me think he was in on the Liv-switch.
I could be wrong though.

yes yes, good pt about walter becoming evil
i think bell is DEAD now....we'll see. my impression was he exploded into an atom bomb giving them the energy needed to get home
yea, i kinda forget what he said about not knowing walter-nate, but he certainly admitted to giving him the shape-shifting technology to stay close to him. bell certainly comes off like not totally trust-worthy
interesting thought on bell being on the liv/switch...because oliva was CLEARLY standing next to bell right b4 the grenade goes off and you never see what happens soooooo who knows! interesting....

The agent for Islanders prospect Travis Hamonic tells Point Blank that a deal between the team and his client will be finalized this week.
“For all intents and purposes, we’re there,” said agent Craig Oster of a three-year, Entry Level contract with Garth Snow for the impressive defense prospect. “We completed some of the work before the Memorial Cup and then took a break. We didn’t want there to be any distractions for Travis. Now we’re back at it and you should hear something in the next few days.”
The Islanders have until the end of May to sign Hamonic, whom they selected with their third pick in the second round of the 2008 draft.
Although some signs have pointed to the Islanders throwing Hamonic directly into the NHL in 2010-11, Oster was wisely more cautious.
“He’s a great kid and a great prospect who you can be confident will get the most out of his talent. He cares so much and has that drive to succeed,” said Oster. “I just don’t know if he’s a guy anyone expects to play right away. Travis will be the first to admit he still has a lot to learn.”

Right-hander Brad Holt, the 33rd overall pick in the 2008 draft out of UNC Wilmington, continues to struggle. Holt dropped to 0-4 with a 13.20 ERA in six starts with the B-Mets after allowing seven runs on eight hits and four walks in 2 2/3 innings Friday. A scout who watched Holt’s latest outing, during which 12 of 20 batters reached base, noted Holt’s fastball ranged between 88-91 mph and nearly every pitch was above the hitters’ belts

HEAD OVER HEELS FOR IKE
05/17/2010 1:16 PM
On Monday, August 2, fans will get one of the most unique giveaways ever -- an upside-down Ike Davis bobblehead!
Davis made his pro debut with the Brooklyn Cyclones on June 26, 2008. The highly-touted first-round pick out of ASU doubled in his first at-bat, and proceeded to notch at least one hit in his first 15 straight games. Less than two years later, Davis is now starring at first base for the New York Mets, and has become something of a cult hero, thanks in part to three specific catches he's made that have all had a similar stuntmanesque theme. Each time, he has flipped over the dugout railing to catch a foul ball in spectacular fashion.
The high-demand Cyclones' bobblehead depicts the Brooklyn alum making just such a catch, and stands 7" tall.
The Ike Davis bobbleheadwill be given to the first 2,500 fans in attendance on Monday, August 2 . First pitch is scheduled for 7pm, with the MCU Park gates opening at 5:30pm.
Jeff Wilpon is taking a gamble by installing Backman at Class-A Brooklyn, but it's worth a shot. Wilpon, in fact, told Backman over the winter that he'll someday manage the Mets – if he can stay out of trouble..

CF Kirk Nieuwenhuis: 0-5, 2 K (.290/.323/.459) Struck out with the tying run at second to end this one; rough night.
On another front, Parnell from night b4 last
RP Bobby Parnell: 1 IP, 2 ER, 3 H, 3 K, 1 HR (0-1, 5.11, 24.2 IP, 26 H, 14 BB, 27 K, 2 HR) There was some chatter in yesterday's report about a nice rebound from BP but I just don't see it; he's given up at least 2 earned runs in 4 of his last 10 appearances

afternoon all! Figgy rips Mets:
“The reward system in that organization just isn’t there for a minor league guy,” he explained, pointing out how a player like OF Jesus Feliciano can perform at Triple-A, but then be passed over. “They jump people they want from other levels.”
Also saying they were more concerned about other teams than themselves.
Bad Figgy...
We were not aware that, occasionally, when the Mets are losing, Darryl Strawberry just comes by and starts yelling at the team. Did you know that? They just let him go in and do that? Apparently they do.
Apparently, last Thursday, before the Yankees series, Strawberry came in the Mets' dugout in Washington and started yelling at the team. It seems to have been about withstanding criticism, like, say, the criticism he was yelling at the team that very second.
Strawberry gave an impromptu "pep talk" to some of the Mets stars last Thursday in Washington, imploring them to ignore the criticism and just play. A pair of newer Mets — identified on WFAN as Jeff Francoeur and Jason Bay — were said to be bothered by it right after it happened.
No wonder both Keith and Ron were not siding with Straw yesterday.
I'm still wondering if he came in as a beloved ex-player ala Reggie, or as an employee of SNY.

I like every aspect of Kirk's game except one: his K rate is redonkulously high. Dude has 12 Ks and 1 BB in his last 10 games. He might be tired or whatever because he also was 0-2 on SB attempts in that time when he was 10 for 10 for season. But the dude is rounding into something toolsy as long as he can figure out a way to be more discerning at the plate and up his OBP% while cutting down his Ks.
Parnell is such a mixed bag. He is King alot more dudes, but he is also giving up alot more hits.

He's actually very right on with this point. Its been an issue of the org's for years and we've all recognized it too. Guys who are overpaid like Sean Green, Gary Matthews Jr. and Little Cat should be dismissed for dudes like Figueroa, Feliciano and Carter....we'd be a better team for it.

I don't know why everyone killed him, apart from the fact that he's an ex-Met. I don't blame him for being bitter. And practically everything he said is true. He and Misch and Taka outperformed Perez and Maine by a ton in spring training, yet all were bumped to the minors and/or DFAed like Figgy. Jacobs got the start at 1B despite being useless. Carter vastly outproduced Cat and GMJr, and was dumped to AAA. GMJr even got the start over Pagan and the first shot at being the everyday guy for reasons beyond comprehension. The Mets don't operate on a merit system. If the Mets were stupid enough to give someone a major league contract, they make the team even if they're worthless.

This is true, but this isn't something that is solely an issue with the Mets.
This is a business, and if you have millions invested in an asset, you are going to give that asset an opportunity to do something positive before eating your money.
The frustrations with the Mets is that they can afford to eat these contracts and they don't

Sometimes I actually wished the Mets weren't such a large spending ballclub because it would force them to be more efficient and creative in their decision making. The difference that this team overspent from the Phillies was really the extra bad contracts they wasted on underperforming players. So then, what is the point of spending so much more if it goes to guys who shouldn't be starting to begin with?

To be fair its not like they never gave Figgy a chance at all...I wish he was still w/ the team. He was a fav of mine. And yes those moves like Jacobs and GmJ being kept are dumb moves. Which again, runs to the point of the counterproductivity of the Mets high payroll. The ENTIRE point of spending like a big market club is that you can go for broke on a higher priced FA and still absorb the loss if he underperforms and needs to be replaced. But what's the point of spending like a large-club if you operate like a small-market organization? I'd argue it actually defeats the purpose of having a large payroll and costs you more in the end if you were just to operate on a mid-market budgets and make creative decisions.
If we had acted like mid-market club in FA when Oliver was on the block we'd never have signed him.

It will be interesting to see what the Mets do in the rotation over the next week, particularly on Saturday.
They’ve got Taka tonight, Pelfrey tomorrow and Santana on Friday against the Brew Crew. Sunday would bring RA back around, followed by Taka, Pelf & YoYo in San Diego on Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday. Thursday’s an off day and it’s back to Citi on Friday.
Jon Niese is scheduled to be reactivated on Monday, June 1 and will slot back somewhere in the rotation.
However, the Mets don’t have a starter for Saturday’s game in Milwaukee.
The question is; do they start Valdes? Do they give Mejia a try? Do they bring up Tobi Stoner for a spot start?
Or do they give the start to Lollie ?
Inquiring minds want to know.

That's where he shows his pettiness IMO. And BTW, what Figueroa fails to mention is that if the Mets are a bit concerned about what people think its because they have been one of the most ripped teams in MLB over the past 3 years. They are consistently being trashed by the media and fans for being weak, lacking heart, underachieving, etc whereas the Phillies get their taints licked.

The whole concerned thing makes no sense. Of course the Mets are concerned w/ the phils in the aspect of beating them. But when you look on the bulletin board stuff its always the Phils talking shit. Mets are choke artists...The Mets are the one stealing signs, the Mets dont promote from within. You barely hear the Mets saying anything about them unless its we want to win the division this year.
Valdes will start. Jerry was coy about it in the PC, but I think it's a no-brainer.

Exactly. Look at the GMJr contract that the Angels are eating, whereas we won't let him go for a measly $2MM. What's worse is that even small market teams eat contracts more readily than the Mets. Tampa Bay cut Pat Burrell with $9MM owing to him this year.
