I mean, he looked so good the first two batters. The called strike 3 to the leadoff guy was great.
But then, the fucking roof caved in.

The one glimmer of silver lining is that he had more life on his FB and his velocity was up over his last start. Yes he sucked, but if Murphy was at 1b instead of Tatis (or God forbid Davis) the Mets get out of the 3rd with no runs being scored -- Tatis should have had the ground ball that scored Helton.

lew, I think you're kidding yourself. If Mark Teixiera was at 1st base, this game was lost. This team can't hit as well can't pitch. Add that to no defense...and you get the NY Mets.
And last night the bullpen imploded from overuse.
Someone mentioned last night that the Mets play on Sunday Night baseball against the Cards this week and Maine pitches. I can think of little that I would rather not see.

Can they send Maine down? Does he have to clear waivers? I can't imagine anyone would pick him up, but maybe Dave Duncan or someone of that ilk could do something with him so someone may be willing to take a chance.

I didn't say they would have won --- but if Tatis handled the ground ball that scored Helton - like he should have -- the Mets are out of the 3rd only down 2-0.
I think Maine can recover, but I think he needs 2-3 AAA starts to get his confidence back -- like I said, the one positive is his fastball was up to 90 from 87 during his last start, and he K'ed 4 -- I am not ready to give up on him completely yet, but I think he needs a few starts in the minor to straigthen himself out.
The problem is there is no one reliable to take his starts on the 40 man roster

Ginn was the only guy all year to beat Revis for a TD
They didn't run all over us in the second game -- that was lost b/c of 3 Sanchez turnovers
Maine's shoulder is toast
and he's not good enough to be effective with an 89-90MPH fastball. his slider is garbage and his change isnt far behind it

He ain't getting fired. The worst part was that he was asked early on in his exit press conf about Redden and then he said he wasn't going to get into specific players. But he then goes on to throw Gaborik under the bus. Really? The guy that was your only offense for about half the season. He went on to say he didn't think Gaborik played well in big games. Yeah, game 81 of the season where he made several amazing passes, one that set up Dubinsky's goal and scored the game winner. Or how about the 2 goal performance against the Isles at MSG in March or scoring the winner that capped the comeback a week later? Not to mention the two sick goals he scored early on against the Caps in Washington.

Rox announcers were fawning over GMJ during his waste of bat swings. One of them played with his dad and the other babysat for sargette when he was a toddler (perfecting the staggering routes in CF). They said he lost his job in Anaheim when the Angels signed Torii Hunter. I guess that is one way of looking at it. They went through his whole career without mentioning his little PED issue or the fact that he has sucked ever since.

The Mets determined that they were going to rely on Ollie and Maine this season.
Maine missed most of last season due to a weak shoulder that had surgery the year prior.
If they failed to work closely with him this season, it is straight up negligence on their part.
We ain't talking about a guy who they planned on using as a middle reliever -- we are talking about 20% of the starting rotation.

Don't get too high on themselves after a good game or two and that he hopes they don't rush DZ too soon. But he withheld a lot on Redden and it seems like he's going to push for him to be booted off the team. Doesn't sound like Jokinen or Christensen will be back.

They should have had someone up his ass all off season
Ehh, the problem is much more about roster building, not in offseason oversight.

Recall the Mets' spring training emphasis on their pitchers throwing strikes. Now check this story by Adam Rubin, featuring Dan Warthen blaming Mets' starters decreased velocity on the "throw strikes" plan. Chances are the decreased velocity is mainly a product of something besides the plan but this invokes memories of the 80-pitch drill and the focus on going to the opposite field. Just more weirdness from Mets officials.

They said that there weren't really any favorites and that it is difficult to speculate about a front runner before the manager is actually gone. They answered an earlier question saying that they did not believe that Jerry had "lost the team." Too early to anticipate a firing.

Yes he gets paid. For next season they have the following forwards under contract:
C: Drury/Anisimov/Boyle
LW: Dubi/Avery/Voros/Brashear (or at least his cap hit)
RW: Gaborik/Callahan
So maybe they bring back Prospal as a center. Maybe it comes at the expense of setting Voros free. Evgeny Grachev, Parenteau (who I think is marginal talent at best), Dane Byers possibly as 3rd/4th line RW choices. All bets are off though if they bury Redden in HFD or trade Rozsival.

I think he was, but he flunked his first test.
the presser, you mean? yeah, pretty fugly. but I could even live with Omar II at the podium if the guy is a talented GM.

Yeah, the press con where he failed to run over Beltran with the bus and managed to get all the blame heaped on Jeffy instead. Notice that he was never heard from again.
I don't want another Omar. I want changes, dammit.

I just don't see the Pons going for a big, expensive name. They'll cheap out and promote from within. Our only hope is an unemployed former GM looking to reclaim his career.
Treme already picked up for 2nd season
Quote:
The move is a significant leap of faith for the network — the show just premiered Sunday night to 1.4 million viewers in its combined airings. By comparison, the final season of modestly rated “The Wire” averaged 890,000 for premiere episodes.
But HBO president Michael Lombardo tells THR that the network loves “Treme” so much that a pickup was inevitable.
“We would have picked up this show last week,” Lombardo said. “We’ve seen the first nine episodes it’s as strong as any show we’ve seen. Much like ‘The Wire,’ the audience is so passionate and so invested. We’re about servicing our subscriber base and I believe that people will become addicted to this show. We have to be a place where this kind of excellence is given space to continue.”

I would have to think the 1993 season would be it when they like won the division and we threw firecrackers and bleach.

Doc, I mentioned last night....it's not about the 2-5 record. It's that this is the exact team they've been for 2 years. Once they're behind...there's no coming back. They can't hit with RISP. They don't talk walks or pitches. They let mediocre pitches make them look silly. They play shoddy defense, Exactly the same problems as in the past. It's not about their current record. And if you think Maine and lollie are going to improve....think again.

Exactly, the themes are the same. I am actually more bullish on Ollie figuring something out than Maine. His fastball has no life, his command is awful and he wants pitch up in the zone. You can't get major league hitters out with that combo.

i disagree.
i think they are better with beltran. wright and bay are obviously not where they could be, but there isn't a reason to pitch to them right now. reyes hasn't played much yet.
those are the points for improvement.
the bullpen has been better than expected. i think yoyo wins half of his starts, what is the most we can expect from niese? pelf? the rest of the SP is trash

Outside of firing Jer (which should be step 1), this is what I want to see
1. Send Meija down to AA to start
2. Cut Castillo
3. Bring up Tejada to play 2nd
4. DL Maine
5. Sign Washburn (he can't be any worse, can he?)
6. Make sure Reese Havens is playing 2nd base (assuming he gets/is healthy)
7. Trade Frenchy
8. Bring up F!
9. Trade/cut GMjr
basically, as my dad says "drop back ten and punt"
they ain't gonna compete for the WC, much less the division, this year.
As much as I hate to say it, trading Carlos Beltran has to be part of a plan like this no?
