Hi Chris. Happy Easter to all. It's a beautiful day up here.

If anyone needs further proof that this management doesn't have a clue....I present this as evidence. Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, I rest my case.

According to SNY’s Kevin Burkhardt, Jerry Manuel said his Opening Day lineup will be:

1. SS Alex Cora
2. 2B Luis Castillo
3. 3B David Wright
4. 1B Mike Jacobs
5. LF Jason Bay
6. CF Gary Matthews Jr.
7. RF Jeff Francoeur
8. C Rod Barajas
9. SP Johan Santana

There's no reason Cora should lead off. He sucks, if he has to play bat him 8th. 2nd, fine. DW third. Fine. Why is Jacobs hitting clean-up? Why is GMJr starting over Pagan?

God its Opening Day and Jerry is already donig a pathetic job to start the season.

Pretend Cora got hurt. Is there anyway in hell Tejada bats lead-off? Of course not. I swear he thinks 1 is for SS and 2 is for 2B. The guy is a complete moron.

a little soggy here in Central Texas, but in a nice way

i think that lineup is putrid, but what would the yankees look like with jeter, tex, and granderson out?

in the spirit of last second optimism, i think we'll be better than most people expect this season. i think the team we put on the field in mid May is a playoff contender, especially if we can upgrade at 2B and the starting pitching is somehow better than what we've seen.

gotta drink the koolaid at the beginning of the season!

pj, enjoy the koolaid, but I have just one word for...Jonestown! lol!

It's really not a question of what would any team be like without 3 starters, it's rather a question of putting out a better team if you have the capability.
Jacobs aside...I would definitely start Pagan over GMj and bat him lead off. And I would start Tejada over Cora ( Tejada had more hits than any Met this spring) and bat him 8th.
Better defense, better offense. What's so difficult to figure out? Guess if you're Manuel, it was too complicated.

Future
04-04-2010, 01:50 PM
If Jeter was out, they'd have issues. Ramiro Pena would probably play SS.

If Tex is out, the Yankees move Nick Johnson to 1B and Posada DHs, Cervelli moves in to catch. Granderson is out, Gardner plays CF.

That's still a much better team than us. It's baffling how we have over a $100 million payroll but have a clean-up hitter even the Royals didn't want, a CF the Angels paid so much of his salary Bud Selig needed to approve the trade. (Who to say he plays CF adequately is a joke.)

We're going to have one of the worst defenses in all of baseball. Look at the Opening Day lineup as projected. When Santana takes the mound three of the positions will be at least defensively average: 3B, P and C. The rest will be below adequate. How horrifying is that? The entire outfield: awful with a side of slightly below average in RF. The entire infield outside of 3B, Terrible, Terrifying, and a butcher at first.

This might be the worst Opening Day defensively for the Mets in a long long time.

i agree with pagan over gmj. i haven't watched many games but i'd want carter over jacobs and tejada over cora. it is possible that this is the last time, individually and collectively, gmj, jacobs, and cora will appear on an opening day roster.

Except Carter's not even on the team.

I took one look at that opening day lineup when I got home, and had to jump on here to laugh/cry with everyone else. Every time I think they can't screw things up worse, Jerry manages to surprise me.

On the bright side, if he keeps managing like this, he'll be out of a job long before the All Star Break. Because if this teams comes out 5-20, he's going to be gonzo.
And then maybe we can get someone in there to save Mejia's arm before Jerry destroys it.

lucienlc
04-04-2010, 03:56 PM
The most bizarre aspect of this, of course, is that Jerry constantly pays lip service to the importance of defense. He talks endlessly about it, and how important it is, and how crucial to the team's success. And then he throws out a lineup like that. The man is schizoid.

Oh, one thing -- I was out at the Citifield workout this am, and the balls were flying out of there during batting practice. With the weather so fine, at least for this week, I have a feeling we may see more HRs in April by far than we did last year when not even the opposition could hit them out.

I just hope the guys who were hitting them out today remember how to do it when they count for something.

Seriously.

Mets say: we want defense.
Mets do: When if Beltran/Reyes/Murphy come back We'll still have two awful corner OFs, a black hole at second base, and the first basemen will be able to field but will hit like an 80s SS so it won't matter.

Mets say: we want pitching
Mets do: Did we say we wanted pitching? We never said it had to be GOOD pitching

Mets say: we don't want to waste guy's options and rush them anymore (see Ike Davis)
Mets do: Who cares about options when its a starting pitcher who has the potential to be a #1 starter for years to come. Work on your fastball, ignore your breaking pitches! Mejia for bullpen!

Excellent post in the Comments section of Metsblog by JohnPacellaCap (pretty much reiterating what we've all said):

On the subject of Jerry’s (and Omar’s) fate, while I disagreed with several of the roster decisions, which spoke to how little spring training performance actually counts to competing for roster spots, I don’t really believe that the season’s success is riding on Catalanotto over Carter or Green over Valdes or Misch or Figueroa. However, I think the decision to keep Mejia is a ridiculously misguided decision.

If Mejia truly has a chance to be special, which most people believe he does, putting him on the roster now to be part of the bullpen will do nothing to foster his development as a starting pitcher. The only way Mejia provides substantial value to the team this year is if he becomes the set-up man and bridge to KRod. In that scenario, he is in a position to hopefully take a good performance by the starter and bridge over to our closer. He isn’t starting the season in that role though and doesn’t have a defined role.

So what will they do with him? Bring him into games where the starter has struggled to get through 5 innings. I don’t see the added value in having him be another member of the bullpen to just eat some innings. It is more important to allow him to work on his secondary pitches in the minors and see if he can develop into a stud starting pitcher in a season or 2.

Even if Mejia does eventually become the team’s 8th inning set-up guy and does well, then what? Is the idea that Mejia is being groomed to eventually replace KRod and become the next closer? The track record for 20 year old major league pitchers who get significant innings at that age and go on to have long successful careers as closers is almost non-existent.

So the decision was made to put Mejia on the major league roster that will certainly, at a minimum, delay his development as a starting pitcher, for the purpose of having a very good arm in the bullpen in some undetermined role (which makes zero sense) or to be the 8th inning guy (which only makes sense if he is viewed as the heir apparent to KRod down the road). But even if he’s the 8th inning guy, history doesn’t support Mejia enjoying a long career as a stud closer. For Omar and Jerry to make the decision to put Mejia on that track rather than giving him another season or 2 in the minors to see if we turn out our own Lincecum, Greinke or Felix Hernandez is incredibly foolish. Those are the types of the decisions that I fear speak to the organization not enjoying the success that they should see given their financial positioning as compared to other teams.

The new Hall of Fame is rather nice. Small, but nice. And there are a LOT more Mets-related touches at Citi now. They put up photos in strategic areas inside the park itself, among other things. And I'm so happy they got rid of the frickin' Ebberts Club (and pics of Ebbets Field), renaming it Champions Club and putting up photos of great Mets moments.

Indeed. Must mean that Beane coudn't get *anybody* to toss a B-prospect in trade. He was definitely expendable considering OAK logjam at 1st/DH/Corner OF, but I certainly didn't think he'd get waived. Huh.

PS- Cust kinda sucked in '09, but he'd still be worlds better than Jacobs.

Bay is terrible, if you think having stats worse than Manny is hyperbole then I don't know what hyperbole is. Manny is one of the worst fielders in MLB and Bay in his time with Boston was even worse! Good luck hoping for Bay to somehow get competent. Frenchy has bad range but a good arm. He's definitely below average. Church is so much better than Frenchy defensively its not even funny. People are obsessed with his arm, but if he can't cut a ball off or catch a ball, who cares about how hard he throws?

Point being the mets infield and up the middle defense is legitimately terrible. Like hardly major league level as of opening day. No need to throw the offensive corner positions into the mix to make the argument the defense will be bad for the immediate future

See, lets agree to disagree. Because I think both corner positions will be woeful defensively. Francouer will probably have a UZR/150 around -6.5 and Bay will have a UZR/150 around -12.

If that screams competence, alright. But it's not my opinion that will be good.

hi Luci...did you have fun today?

Hi, Shea. Yes, I did. Of course, I didn't have the crazy expectations that a bunch of fans evidently did. Apparently, WFAN got deluged with complaining Mets fans bitching about how the Mets players didn't sign autographs and talk to the fans. The fact that Mike Jacobs was out in the Rotunda before the game, posing for pictures and signing everything, and the fact that the players threw a ton of hats and balls into the stands was somehow irrelevant. I understand why folks might want autographs, etc., but it's not like it was promoted that way.

The Hall of Fame was nice. But I was even more appreciative of the photos scattered around the inside of the building.

And it was a totally beautiful day. Absolutely delightful. Plus, Mejia was doing his exercises and long-tossing right by where we were sitting, so I got to watch him a lot. It was also funny watching the pitchers shagging a lot of the fly balls.

As I said earlier, a LOT of the balls were going out of the park. At one point, someone (I think GMJr) hit three in a row. A bunch of them reached the second deck in left (and one went even higher than that). We may be in for a lot of HRs this week, until the weather changes again.

Too bad the mets didn't know Sho could get out lefties. Oh well!

The problem with that is they didn't know Sho couldn't get righties out, then tied his worth to that inability. For some reason they can't tie Green's worth to the inability to get lefties out.

One thing that confuses me about baseball. The curveball is thrown and it ends up in the same place, high. Since its a curveball it obviously crosses the plate higher than that.

But you throw a fastball at the same height and its a ball.

Regarding Mejia: I think we all pretty much agree that Wainwright is not an apt comparison for the kid. But you know who is, to some extent? Pedro Martinez. He was in minor league ball at 18, and started every game in the minors for three years (90, 91 and 92). IN 93, at the age of 21, he came up to the majors as a relief pitcher. Then was traded the following year to the Expos, who turned him back into a starter (I don't need to say, with considerable success <g>).

Now, the difference between them, is that Mejia is a year younger than Pedro, and has considerably fewer innings under his belt (for some reason, Pedro went from 77 IP his first season to 177 IP his second to 125 his third, whereas Mejia has gone from 43 to 71 to 94). But it's a far more apt comparison than Wainwright -- and at least Pedro survived the process relatively unscathed.

I'm also wondering if, because of his experiences with the Expos, this is why Minaya was willing to take this chance with the kid (in addition to trying to save his job).
