According to Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com, free agent catcher Bengie Molina has lowered his asking price.

The Mets have been keeping tabs on Molina all winter but have been unwilling to meet his demands thus far. The 35-year-old catcher hit just .265/.285/.442 last season but he mashed a career-high 20 home runs..

Good for the Mets not giving in to Molina. While I can sort of justify paying a premium for Jason Bay, Molina just ain't worth the years. The easy thing, especially with Omar fighting for his job, would be to just sort of give up. Hopefully he'll keep it up.

Well, that's the question. When he says "lowered the asking price", is he talking dollars or years? Because as far as I know, the sticking point hasn't been the dollars. It's been that Molina wants three years on that lard body of his.

It would be really really cool if it was just 1 year and no option.

1 year/5M or so and i could be ok w that. no 2nd year! COME ON OMAH!

I could do one year with a moderately attainable option.

A source told Tim Kurkjian of ESPN.com that the Mets could possibly sign free agent catcher Bengie Molina in "the next 48 to 72 hours." .

I think it will be two years but a few dollars less than we thought. I'm choosing to think of this as a "win" since I was so sure that Omar would go to three years.

But I'm still crossing my fingers for only one year. . .

As long as it is only one year, I don't mind.

Molina is the best of a collection of bad options while it is figured out if Thole is any kind of long-term solution.

But holy Christ, multiple years for a guy who was overrated even BEFORE he broke down?

Who does he think he is, Luis Castillo?

It's kind of sad that we've all resorted ourselves to this move. It's been in the pipeline so long that we've all just sort of accepeted. It's a dumb move made for dumb reasons and the thinking behind it speaks to everything that is wrong with our philosophy with roster construction. We're a beaten group!

I love the Bay move about a million more times than this. At least Bay is a good player without taking into account any "intangibles".

Very true! This situation has been an interesting lesson in lowered expectations. But I agree with Dep's original comment that I'll feel some sort of victory if this turns into an ill-advised signing, that has little impact on the medium turn -- as downgraded from egregious contract that hamstrings us for 3 years.

Come on, Omar!! I have faith that you can accomplish the merely-dumb move. You can do it!!! ;-)
