It's the sort of thing that is much more likely to happen in fantasy baseball than in real life, but according to sources, an idea has been kicked around the Phillies' organization internally, with discussions about proposing a swap of slugger Ryan Howard for St. Louis superstar Albert Pujols.

Lunkwill Fook

And here's the worst thing about Ovechkin. This is his quote after the incident:

It's on video, you fucking moron. You quite clearly threw him into the wall.

By the way, I think people are slowly but surely starting to realize that Ovechkin is dangerous. Like I said last year.
He's dangerous with legal hits because he's a freight train when he's skating at full speed. The illegal hits make it worse. I know there's the debate as to whether his hit was dirty because some people interpret it that Campbell was turning and put himself in a vulnerable position. Yes he was turning because he was going to glide around the net after reversing the puck up the boards and essentially disengaging himself from the play. It's one thing if he was skating in the opposite direction (or essentially skating into the play), I haven't really seen any mention of the position of the puck when it comes to determining whether the hit was clean or not. Some people say it's finishing your check, but it was an unnecessary follow through whether he shoved him into the boards or slightly grazed him with his shoulder.
Lunkwill Fook
03-15-2010, 09:56 AM
Exactly. It was unnecessary and Campbell was vulnerable. That's the kind of thing that the NHL is trying to avoid.
The problem with Ovechkin and why I think he truly IS dangerous is that he doesn't learn. When he got suspended for kneeing Gleason earlier in the season, he vowed that he wouldn't change his playing style and that the suspension just made him angrier.
WHAT?
He truly is a million dollar player with million dollar skills and a ten cent head.

That being said, there's no way they suspend him. Not after letting Matt Cooke get off scottfree.
Here's a question: if you get ejected three times in a season for injuring opposing team's players, don't you think it's hypocritical of the league to award you the MVP?

If the Caps win the cup that will all be forgotten. As much as you can praise Messier for his leadership and attitude, the dude laid some nasty and illegal hits on people in his day. I still remember how he blindsided Modano that one game. I think Modano might have been out before he hit the ice, with his helmet out of place.

Puhleeze...
Hey, Rex Ryan told us he was working on his abs this offseason.
Turns out, doctors were working on them, also.
Ryan, who in his first season as a NFL head coach guided the New York Jets to the AFC Championship Game and one victory shy of the Super Bowl, underwent weight-loss surgery Saturday at NYU Medical Center, the team confirmed over the weekend.
The out-patient lap-band procedure was Ryan's latest stab in his bout with obesity. He also underwent surgery to repair a hernia.
Team officials said Ryan, 47, was at his home in New Jersey and relaxing following the procedure, which wrapped an adjustable band around the upper part of his stomach, allowing less food to enter the stomach and decreasing appetite. That should be a good thing for Ryan, given the publicity his belly got this offseason.

Yeah, but I believe the voting for MVP comes before the playoffs. Whether they win the Cup or not should have no bearing on the eventual MVP award winner.

He'll get MVP votes. Especially if he wins the Ross and Richard trophies again. When was the last time you heard of a player winning the scoring and/or points titles and not getting a nod for the Hart? The voters never get the Hart trophy right anyway. It's precise definition is the player most valuable to his team. If that were the case then Lundqvist would have at least one Hart nomination along with his ones for the Vezina.

Maine is happy that his shoulder didn't fall off, so I guess I am also happy about that.
I have a feeling we will like the Barajas acquisition. He'll hit enough and be solid back there. And we didn't go crazy for him. He makes Blanco kind of unnecessary, but we wouldn't have gotten Barajas that cheap if we had gotten him earlier in the offseason, so it's just one of those things. If only Reyes weren't in traction I could have some hope for this damn team.
Lunkwill Fook
03-15-2010, 10:23 AM
Honestly, I'd be happy right now if we'd found a way to ditch Castillo and have a serviceable 2nd baseman like Lopez. I'd feel better about both the lineup and the team defense up the middle which, in turn, would make me feel better about the pitching.

It bothered me that Maine siad he didn't like warming up while Santana was pitching. John, you're a pitcher...what difference does it make? I guess he's trying to counter the send him to the bullpen throng before it begins again.
Try getting outs regardless...K? Thnx!
And poor Figgz. All he does is throw strikes and get outs. Why would we possibly consider him for the bullpen?

Shea, I've said it before and I'll say it again: Pitchers are probably the biggest divas in sports, certainly they are in baseball. They are like the WRs of the NFL. They want to "know their roles" and have "set routines" and all this BS. They get babied so much throughout their careers that it empowers them to a large extent.

I can see where Maine is coming from with his comments about not being comfortable coming out of the pen.
Dude is used to being ready to go at a set time. Coming out of the pen, he needs to time his warmups right, so he is not too rested when he starts, or too tired.
I posit that this is not an easy thing to do for a guy not used to working out of the pen.
They should have just had him start the B game (split squad)

Because no one really cares about the secondary Caps stars that have made that team into a true contender. As far as they're concerned it's all OV. Ok, maybe people know about Mike Green because of the faux-hawk, but people don't quite bring up Alex Semin or Backstrom up when they talk about the Caps surge to the top of the league.
And Malkin will never outshine Crosby, despite the fact that Malkin has won as many Art Ross trophies and won the Conn Smythe.

Worse -- some idiots in the organization think he projects as a reliever (doubtless, because of his slight build. Where have we heard this before?). If he's a reliever anyway, then there's not much downside to keeping him in the majors because he can relieve here as well as down there.
But for those of us who think he might actually project as a top flight starting pitcher, it's ridiculous, counterproductive and beyond stupid and short-sighted. Which is typical of the Mets we love and despise.

I'd go with Tatis over Adams. Adams is, at best, a replacement-level player. And we already have a backup middle infielder in Tejada.
I read somewhere, I’d like to say it was Gammons, that the Mets “baseball people” want to send Mejia down, implying SOF wants him up.

"The price during the season is usually a lot better than the price in the winter," said COO Jeff Wilpon.

Rave, I think the Mets are making a "publicity" decison...looking for any good press they can get. Of course, when they destroy this kid it will be a different story. The mets have no forward thinking. They're like 3 year olds. They need instant gratification and don't think of any consequences down the road.

Mejia can only throw so many innings this year anway, so if the Mets sent him down as a starter and bulked up his load pretty good, it might not be a terrible decision to bring him up as a reliever midseason (preferably later), if there was a need (how could there not be) and we would still be elevating his overall innings this year to acceptable level.

I'd love to think that's because they were smart......alas, I believe it's because until very recently no one thought the mets had a farm. F was too injury prone and Mejia too small. I know shea :). It's especially irritating for me personally when he has a decent outing, the first in a long while, and he sits there and bitches and moans about it like he's some perfectionist. Dude be happy, you went over 5 innings and didn't give up five gopher balls or lose and body parts. Don't act like pitching 7 innings 2 run ball is a failure when clearly it's a goddamn minor miracle every time it happens. The only person that can bitch about an outing like that is yoyo because he turns in routinely awesome performances so differentiating the mere good ones is quite easy

Yeah, OV's excuse was total horseshit. What makes me angry isn't necessarily his hits. It's that he NEVER EVER EVER owns up to them. They're never his fault. Someone is going to really clean his clock and it's going to be soon.

It's not really about winning for the star players. It's about showing that you're not afraid of the repercussions from playing hard. It's about respect. That's why stars really only have to fight once or twice in their career and then they're done.

I don't remember the circumstances of why the gloves were dropped in the first place, but usually Ovie and Bradley wouldn't be on the ice at the same time. So was it the case that Ovie delivered a hit and the Caps had a suspicion that they'd go after him so they sent out Bradely?

The worst part about something like Ovie illegally running people over is that the long time fans of the NHL will complain about how the league has a two tiered justice system between the stars and regulars. And one thing the NHL forgets is that a big component of attracting new/casual fans to the games is having the already established fanbase introduce them to the game. And when the hardcore fans talk poorly of the game and how the rules are enforced, how is a casual fan supposed to react?

I'm thinking of your mom.
I wonder how many Greg Brady taunts he's gotten.
unfortunate.

Nedved had a hot wife, who then realized she was married to Petr Nedved.

Nedved is the archetype of the player that wilts under the NYC spotlight.

And Nedved was part of the compensation for Mike Keenan, remember when we talked about my not so-much love for the Blues yesterday Tim? Petr Nedved is a big reason why.

Seemed like half the league got messed up because of him. Nedved held out from Vancouver for almost a year. The Blues sign him, the Canucks get awarded Craig Janney as comp. Janney doesn't want to go to Vancouver (presumably so he can stick around and watch his ex-wife get married to Shanny) so the Blues send them Jeff Brown and a couple of other players to get Janney back. And then the NHL mandated the trade after the Keenan case that sent one of my favorite Rangers from the 94 team, Tikkanen, in exhcnage for Nedved.

Nedved, Robitaille, and Kovalev. Three guys that just sucked in NY but thrived everywhere else.

Stevens was on the shit end of his career regardless. Nedved, Robitaille, and Kovalev all went on to have excellent seasons after they left.

Some of it was that he was never the same after having his face broke in a few different places in that game vs the Isles. The other part was that a lot of people looked better than they actually were playing with Lemieux.

The sad part is that Stevens was only the 2nd biggest substance abuser on the Rangers during that time period.

Basically. When he came back from the face injury, he was no better than a 20 goal scorer. And without Lemieux...
