4th in the NL in runs suggests they do pretty well knocking guys in. And the first 2 games of this series provide just as much evidence that they do get clutch hits as much as the last 2 games (this one included) demonstrate that they couldn't score in a whorehouse with a fistful of $100s. Add that up and you get what the Mets are, a .500 team with a fraction of their optimal lineup left on the field.

we are exactly what we thought we were, if not slightly over that. we'll probably finish a few games over .500. and quite honestly in almost any other division we'd still be in the hunt for division lead. I mean we're tied in wins with the Indians who are only 2 games back in the AL Central. Its crazy.

Not sure if DL is being sarcastic or not, but I don't think they end up over .500. The starting pitching has basically fallen apart...yes, Niese did fine today...the bullpen is a mess, their defense is less than stellar and most importantly....they can't win at home where they play the majority of remaining games.

They came back a couple of times vs the Braves but couldn't get all the way over the hump. They had those back to back last out homers to tie the game vs the Nats and Fish. And there were also two 8th inning comebacks vs the Padres this week. But right now they're lacking the top hitter and 5th best hitter in the NL from their lineup. They're resilient, just not that talented right now.

And there were also two 8th inning comebacks vs the Padres this week. But right now they're lacking the top hitter and 5th best hitter in the NL from their lineup. They're resilient, just not that talented right now.
The bottom line is they haven't gained an inch in the WC race in 2 months even when Reyes and Murph were playing. They are what they are.

which is basically a .500 team.
Not sure if DL is being sarcastic or not, but I don't think they end up over .500. The starting pitching has basically fallen apart...yes, Niese did fine today...the bullpen is a mess, their defense is less than stellar and most importantly....they can't win at home where they play the majority of remaining games.
i said i don't think we're going to be over .500
we're much more likely to end up around 75 wins for the year

Well that's a function of the Braves playing well too. They have the arms to compete, the Mets don't. I'm sure you saw the stats they kept on flashing during the series last weekend about their lockdown bullpen. There are a number of games the last couple of weeks where if you swapped the 7th/8th/9th pitchers of the Mets with the Braves, I'd imagine the WC race would look somewhat different.

I don't think we'll be over .500 either.
he's only going to play half the season for the eagles anyway
nothing the eagles do will make them as good as the pack either
i wish i could be half as understanding and normal when it came to the mets as it did with the giants, but that's what a championship brings
the problem was, when we were winning quite a bit, the braves simply weren't losing that much

That's really silly. If we had the Phillies starting pitching things would be different, too. We don't. We are who we are. The mets had every chance to draft or sign players that our management didn't. As out friend john says....IIWII! The Braves have a lock down bullpen because the drafted them and brought them along. The Phils have the rotation they do because their management was creative and had a farm to make trades. We didn't do any of that. Our management was awful and not very forward thinking. So now we start again.
i know we are depleted, but after starting the series out with those two comeback wins, it's deflating as fuck to not come away with a series win. especially against an equally turdlike team like the padres. and at home, where we are a disgrace. not shockingly, the padres have been a pain in our asses for a while:
2007 2-4
2008 2-5
2009 2-5
2010 3-3
2011 2-2

A bullpen is the easiest part of a team to build, although it's also the one that can experience the most volatility. This wasn't a commentary on what the Mets should have done during the Minaya regime. That topic has been discussed to death here.
This is more to say that the Braves performance in late innings for the past month or so has been unbelievably good and most likely unsustainable. Had the Mets bullpen had that type of run or the Braves bullpen had some games like the Mets the wild card race would look different. I don't think the Mets would be where the Braves are, but the difference in the standings wouldn't be quite as substantial.

Phillies and Mets had pretty similar records vs the East in 2008. The real difference was their records vs the Central. To that extent, I can remember a sweep in Houston and blowing a couple of winnable games vs the Buccos.

Which wasn't as painful as the 4 game sweep in Philly in 2007. Where like every close call and lucky bounce went Philly's way. A BS call on a Marlon Anderson takeout slide, a 30 foot roller that stopped on the line that tied a game late, Willie leaving an absolutely gassed Wagner to blow a game after the Mets rallied from a ton of runs down, etc.

Wags came on with a 6-4 lead, gave up a hit that allowed an inherited runner to score then gave up a 3HR to Tony Clark.
