Annoying keeper league question for my peeps but I'm legitimately torn. We get to keep 8, and I know I'm going to keep Longoria, Mauer, Kinsler, Sizemore, Lester, Bay and Beckett. So 5 sticks and 2 pitchers in that group. I'm battling over these peeps for my 8th and final keeper, knowing I should probably just keep the 8 best regardless of position, but it's tough.
Kendry Morales
Matt Garza
Max Scherzer
What say you???
Lunkwill Fook
03-11-2010, 09:18 AM
I'd go with Morales. He's the only one I trust in that group.
Joe A.
03-11-2010, 09:18 AM
I'd keep Morales. 1B is deep, but I bet every option better than Morales will be protected.

Thanks fellas. I was leaning towards Morales but I have a true infatuation with Matt Garza so it's hard for me to let him back in the draft pool. I actually also considered keeping Garza over Beckett because of age/no injury issues (yet). But I can't bring myself to actually do it.

Beckett may be more injury prone but he's got that K/9, K/BB advantage.

this is what i wrote:
here's an idea, how about the fucking mets talk to a player and/or agent BEFORE they release something to make sure both are on the same page with regards to what's in the release and the message.
its really not rocket science and the mets continue to fuck it up and leave themselves bent over waiting for the media to ram it in.
there is no reason the mets n reyes should not be on the same page b4 the mets sent out that press release...and if jose disagrees with the message, you'll find out before you go public with it and can deal with it then.
not hard stuff, but apparently too hard for mets mgmt to figure out
you'd think they would have learned to amend their process after the beltran debacle, but apparently not.

I honestly can't think of a team in the past 20 years across all sports that can't get out of it's own way more than the Mets both on the field and off. There are bigger disappointments on the field for sure (Detroit Lions, LA Clippers) but I don't know if any team likes to shoot themselves in the foot nearly as much and then act as if nothing is wrong.

Rangers are starting to get there.
The Rangers don't embarrass themselves nearly as much off the ice as the Mets do off the field because no one ever gets to speak to Sather. In fact they're pretty well regarded for the charity work they do around the city. Only 1 of the NY tabloids even has a beat reporter that consistently spills a slight amount of ink over the team and that's Larry Brooks. Daily News, NYTimes, Newsday all occasionally mention hockey if at all.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind Staal. I just didn't want to overload the team with Rangers after already putting Gaborik/Cally/DZ on the team. I was considering Okposo but for the role he'd play he'd make too much.

Here's another thing that makes me crazy....
Mets manager Jerry Manuel is determined to begin using Mejia in short and frequent relief spurts, to gauge how he reacts to pitching in that capacity.
Why the hell don't they keep this kid away from Manuel. Look what the Yanks did to Joba? The Mets need to develop starting pitching ( in case they haven't noticed!)

Shea asked what team is worse than the Mets with regard to shooting themselves in the foot?
I give you, the Nw York Islanders:
You’re Never Out of it: At the general managers’ meetings this week in Florida, the Islanders presented a proposal to improve their chances of qualifying for the Stanley Cup playoffs in future seasons.
The Islanders’ concept - delivered by GM Garth Snow - was for a “play-in” mini-tournament in which the teams at the bottom of each conference would square off against each other to qualify as the eighth seed.
After playing 82 regular season games, teams 8-15 in the East and West would still get a shot at making the playoffs. Wouldn’t matter if you were essentially out of the hunt before Christmas, as the Islanders were last season.
The Islanders, who appear poised to finished 26th or worst in the 30-team NHL for the third consecutive season, apparently did not receive much positive feedback. The Columbus Blue Jackets pushed for the removal of the “loser point” for teams losing in overtime or in the shootout. That proposal was also dismissed.
The story of the Islanders’ idea was first reported by TSN, Sportsnet and the Canadian Press. One journalist in Boca Raton said the best aspect of the concept was the laugh it brought to all of the hockey people and media at meetings predominantly focused on rulings on hits to the head.
When asked by Point Blank about the merits of the team’s proposal, a National Hockey League source replied, “The chances of it happening are the same as it being taken seriously - zero percent.”
Here’s what I want to know. Let’s say, as they did last year, the Islanders play 82 games and finish last in the league. However, they win the play-in tournament and get swept by Washington in the first round.
Would that mean, because of the round robin, they would lose the top pick in the draft? You’d have to think so, which would really make a person wonder.

Cincinnati Bengals are pretty hilarious (actually that whole conference is frakked up). Mets problems are real and, in some cases avoidable by a good PR office, but they are amplified because of the NY media.

Oh yeah, the D is worrisome. Fraser should be benched for his assist to Prust and tripping on his laces on Christensen's shot (yes yes, it was Elias' fault, but I choose to ignore that). But the Devils need Marty to stop the sucks before they can really do anything else.

The Christensen's goal wasn't Elias fault, sometimes a player just pulls off a brilliant move. Elias isn't paid to stand people up and knock them down. Just like Gaborik isn't paid to play D, as he was on I think the Devils 2nd or 3rd goal.
Kovalchuk though, created some oohs and aahs with some nifty dangles, but not terribly noticeable otherwise. 3 goals in 10 games is it? He's crazy if he thinks he's going to get the salary cap max unless he's an absolute monster in the playoffs. Fair or unfair he'd have the big question mark of whether he can play when it matters most.

Yeah, Marty made some good saves. But you have to admit, when he gives up three, he usually loses.
The Rangers have made it a habit of tipping in their own goals this season. Staal would probably have another eight goals if own goals counted on his record. Just horrible horrible luck over and over again. I thought Girardi did a pretty good job of defending a 4-1, knocking down the pass. Of COURSE it goes right between Hank's legs....

DEP! OOH NOOOOO!!!!!
Residents living near homes police said were used to grow marijuana were shocked their neighborhoods were launching pads for a $10 million drug operation.
Last month, police found 3,370 growing pot plants in five rented homes in Monroe, Old Bridge, Millstone, Manahawkin and Manalapan. Money and packaging materials were found in a sixth home, also in Old Bridge.
Authorities said the sophisticated indoor growing scheme operated undetected for two years. Three people have been arrested so far, while another three are on the run.
"This is a network of individuals who have extensive knowledge of the method of mass producing marijuana plants indoors," Attorney General Paula Dow said. "They selected large houses, frequently in pretty upscale neighborhoods, where the properties are widely spaced and they were not likely to garner direct attention."
A two-story lavender house on 535 Beach Ave. in Manahawkin fit that description. It was down the road from a high school, located a quarter mile back from the road in a heavily wooded area. Police say the found 464 plants there.
Next-door neighbor Edna Collins said she never knew something illegal was going on until she saw a dozen police SUVs up and down the street.
``How would you know?" she said. ``You would never see anything."
Another 504 plants were found in another two-story home with a three-car garage at 38 Robbins Road in Millstone.

PATERSON, N.J. - A New Jersey man with apocalyptic visions is accused of years of terrorizing his family, raping his five daughters and impregnating three, beating his children with wooden boards and even moving at one point to avoid child welfare investigators.
The nightmarish picture of a family subjected to more than a decade of threats and violence and largely cut off from the outside world is emerging in a state courthouse where prosecutors are preparing to have the man stand trial five times, one per child victim.
As the first case nears trial, questions have been raised about whether state authorities could have put a stop to the abuse sooner. Some of the crimes are alleged to have occurred while the family was under scrutiny by the state child welfare agency, and after the father had been arrested and pleaded guilty to assault and child endangerment.

Al Arbour used to do the goalie switch alot. Some guys would make a switch, and then, switch back.
Back then, the good part for the team doing it was the goalie got to warm up by facing shots (like a relief pitcher), so it was like a free time-out.
The league then changed the rule to no warm ups.

JACKSON, Miss. - A northern Mississippi school district will not be hosting a high school prom this spring after a lesbian student asked to attend with her girlfriend and wear a tuxedo.
The Itawamba County school district's board decided Wednesday to drop the prom because of what it called recent distractions, but without specifically mentioning the girl's request, which was backed by the American Civil Liberties Union.
The student, 18-year-old high school senior Constance McMillen, said it was retaliation for her efforts to bring her girlfriend, also a student, to the April 2 dance.

I have an indoor pool.
My bathtub.
seriously, there are a few of them in my area. Rumor has it one house a couple of blocks away has an indoor AND outdoor pool.
the house was for sale forever, due to the high price and the taxes.
Ed, when we were looking at lake houses in recent years, one of the houses I really liked had an indoor pool of mammoth proportions. Absolutely gorgeous, huge pool, with a wide walking/sitting area surrounding it, as well as another dining/entertaining area slightly raised and off to one side with fridge and other kitchen accountrements. Ceiling was like thirty feet high. I couldn't even imagine how ghastly the heating bills on this place must be in winter. That's without getting into the windowed side overlooking the lake. Magnificent place (but way too much house for us, even w/o considering the undoubtedly staggering maintenance costs).

mets v sox on tv here today.
Posnanski weighs in on Mets
Quote:
Of course, different people have different ideas about what makes an exciting baseball player. But, in general, the blueprint would look an awful lot like Jose Reyes.
In fact, not that long ago, Bill James and I plotted out a formula (admittedly the formula is a lot more me than Bill -- he just offered suggestions) to try and determine the most exciting players in baseball. I lost that original formula, but I tried to recreate it, taking into account triples (the most exciting play in baseball!), stolen bases, batting average, defensive excitement (subjective) and a couple of other things. I'm pretty sure I created the most wildly flawed formula to appear on the Internet today.
Here then, according to this wildly flawed formula, are the 11 most exciting seasons of the last 25 years:
1. Jose Reyes, 2006.
2. Jose Reyes, 2008
3. Jimmy Rollins, 2007
4. Ichiro Suzuki, 2001
5. Carl Crawford, 2004
6. Jose Reyes, 2007
7. Chuck Knoblauch, 1996.
8. Hanley Ramirez, 2006
9. Tony Gwynn, 1987
10. Tim Raines, 1985
11. Carlos Beltran, 2001.
Obviously, you can create your own formula -- and I hope you will -- but the point is that at least according to one fairly standard view, Reyes defined exciting baseball. He hit lots of triples. He also hit doubles and a few home runs. He led the league in stolen bases three years in a row. He made dazzling plays at shortstop. Sure, there were always people who thought Reyes needed to get on base more and could have been a touch steadier defensively. But that stuff would come! The point with Reyes was excitement. He was exciting. The Mets were exciting.
Anyway, that's how it was in 2006, when Reyes was 23 years old and the Mets won 97 games. That's also how it was in 2007, when Reyes stole 78 bases -- most in 20 years -- and the Mets led the National League East by seven games in mid-September, you know, before losing 12 of their last 17 and blowing it to the Phillies.
Oh well, there was excitement even then. The Mets signed the best pitcher in baseball, Johan Santana. Reyes has probably his best season -- led the league with 204 hits and 19 triples, stole 56 bases. And the Mets led the National League East by 3½ games in mid-September, you know, before losing four of their next five and never again getting back into first place.
Sure, the late season fadeouts hurt. They hurt a lot. But -- and it's easy to forget this -- the Mets still looked to be in awfully good shape. Reyes was exciting. Santana was dazzling. Third baseman David Wright was one of the best players in baseball. Center fielder Carlos Beltran was one of the best players in baseball. Carlos Delgado had hit 38 home runs -- the 11th time in 12 years he hit 30-plus homers. Francisco Rodriguez came to New York after he had set the single-season save record in Anaheim -- finally, the Mets had their answer for the Great Rivera.
So, how did it all go so wrong? Just look at the Mets now. They are now arguing over Jose Reyes' thyroid. That's the big story at Mets camp these days. The Mets seem to believe -- based on what they're hearing from doctors -- that Reyes has an overactive thyroid. Reyes seems to believe -- based on what he's hearing from doctors -- that his thyroid is fine. Everybody is waiting for the results from the latest tests. These days, Jose Reyes' thyroid has the third highest Q-Rating in New York, behind only David Paterson and David Letterman. It could get its own show by the weekend.
Of course, the thyroid talk is just an emblem of the Mets' issues -- of Carlos Beltran's knee surgery, of David Wright's power outage, of Carlos Delgado's hip injury, of the surgery Johan Santana had to remove bone chips, of the Mets' abominable 70-92 record last year.*
* The Mets became the first team in baseball history to spend $140 million (well, $149 million and some change) and have a losing record. Here is a list of all the teams to spend $140 million on payroll in a season and their win total:
2009 Mets: 70 wins
2009 Yankees: 103 wins
2008 Yankees: 89 wins
2007 Yankees: 94 wins
2007 Red Sox: 96 wins
2006 Yankees: 97 wins
2005 Yankees: 95 wins
2004 Yankees: 101 wins
2003 Yankees: 101 wins
In other words, the thyroid talk is just the latest in a whole bunch of really weird things to happen to the Mets. Of course, Mets fans -- at least the ones I hear from all the time -- seem to think this is all just part of being ... Mets fans. It's all part of the tradition. The Mets have a proud history of "The Mets Being The Mets" that, of course, goes back to the 1962 team that most people would agree was the worst baseball team of the last 100 years.
The teams that followed were not much better -- until the 1969 Miracle Mets and the 1973 Ya Gotta Believe Mets. Then, the late 1970s, another dreadful lull, that time when Joe Torre came to understand that it's hard to be a genius with Lenny Randle at third, Doug Flynn at second and Craig Swan as your Opening Day starter.
Then, came the great mid-80s Mets that didn't win quite as much as they should have won. Then came the dreadful early 1990s Mets, the good-but-not-good enough late 1990s Mets, the dreadful early 2000s Mets, and finally this team dealing with a spotty lineup, a spotty rotation and a thyroid problem.
The thing is, that if they could stop the bad momentum ... this Mets team has talent. Johan Santana, if he's healthy, is as good as anybody. Beltran appears to be on the mend after knee surgery -- he says that he's feeling better about his knee than he has in years. You would like to believe that David Wright, having worked out whatever swing problems he had last year, will return to being a terrific player. Jason Bay gives the Mets a strong middle-of-the lineup bat. The rotation -- with 20-somethings Mike Pelfrey, John Maine and Oliver Perez -- could be OK, and K-Rod is still a top closer no matter what Goose Gossage may have said about him.*
* I guess Gossage called K-Rod a "clown" because of his theatrics on the field, and K-Rod responded by saying he had never heard of Gossage. So, that went well. Gossage also suggested that while Mariano Rivera is the best "modern reliever," he prefers himself and the 52 saves in which he got at least seven outs. Rivera, he points out, only has two of those. Case closed.
And while this is off-topic, it should be pointed out that Gossage does not have the most seven-out saves in baseball history, and he doesn't have the second most, and he doesn't have the third, fourth, fifth or sixth-most either. One of his teammates, Sparky Lyle, had more.
The list of most saves, 7-or-more outs:
1. Rollie Fingers, 74 saves
2. Dan Quisenberry, 65 saves
3. Gene Garber, 64 saves
4. Hoyt Wilhelm, 61 saves
5. Mike Marshall, 57 saves
6. Sparky Lyle, 56 saves
7. Goose Gossage, 52 saves
8. Lindy McDaniel, 51 saves
9. Bill Campbell, 49 saves
10. Bob Stanley, 48 saves.
And then there's Jose Reyes. He was hurt for almost all of the 2009 season. He has had a rough camp with his thyroid issues and with the FBI questioning him about his connection to Canadian doctor Tony Galea, who has been charged with conspiring to smuggle HgH into the U.S. But here's the thing. He's only 26 years old. He says that he feels healthy. He still has the talent to be one of the most exciting players in the game. And he and the Mets are due for something good ... it has to happen one of these days.

Sorry, Shea. I was referring to the article that Dep posted. Joe Posnanski is doing a series of articles.
So, we’re going to start something here, something that I fully intend to regret, something I will call The Player of the Day. The idea is to write about an interesting player from a different team every day leading up to Opening Day. My hope is that the player will somehow reflect what I think about the team. You may ask: Why would anyone start a lunatic project like this?
And I would answer: Because it’s there.

Mets shortstop Jose Reyes will rest, refrain from athletic activity and make changes in his diet, according to the treatment prescribed by doctors and specialists, the Mets announced on Thursday.
The shortstop will be sidelined for an unknown period of time. Reyes' thyroid levels will be monitored through reglar blood tests, and he will be cleared to resume baseball activities once his thyroid levels return to normal.
The Mets said that additional blood tests confirmed that Reyes' thyroid hormone blood levels are elevated.

This better not save Jer's job. "Beltran and Jose were out until June 1, and it's hard to field a competitive bla bla bla..."
.
In a surprise development to the Mets and Jose Reyes' agent, the shortstop will open the season on the DL.
On a conference call with reporters, agent Peter Greenberg and GM Omar Minaya said that Reyes cannot have any physical exertion for the next two to eight weeks. Initial tests suggested Reyes could be back in Port St. Lucie by the weekend, but the final tests showed Reyes' thyroid levels spiked upward again when he did controlled physical activity earlier this week.
Reyes' thyroid levels will be tested weekly, and he'll be cleared to resume physical activity once those normalize. That could take as long as two months, however, Greenberg said. Reyes should be absent several weeks beyond when the thyroid normalizes because he will be idle and will need to get back into playing shape.
“He’s just going to have to rest,” Minaya said. “There’s not a specific time frame when it will get back to normal, but our doctors will be testing that on a regular basis.”
“Jose obviously is a little bit disappointed that it’s going to be a matter of weeks as opposed to days,” Greenberg said. “But it’s a completely curable, treatable situation. I think we all view it as good news. He's supposed to rest and watch his diet. He's not supposed to do anything that is going to raise the heart level so that the irritation can go down. ... He'll be tested on a weekly basis and hopefully the levels will start down. The doctors told us this was the best possible diagnosis and that there is no intervention or medication necessary."
Greenberg said a virus or dietary cause may have triggered the initial thyroid trouble.
Minaya said 20-year-old Ruben Tejada could be the Mets' Opening Day shortstop, with Alex Cora also an option.
It's a huge blow to the Mets, who already are without Carlos Beltran, likely until mid-May. Jerry Manuel hoped to use Reyes in the No. 3 hole until Beltran returned.
Reyes will not require medication, such as radioactive iodine, according to his agent.
"There is no medication for this," Minaya said. "What we heard from our doctors and the specialists in this area is that it's just rest right now."
Greenberg suggested the high level of physical activity for a professional athlete means Reyes needs to particularly be cautious.
"I think that's probably very accurate and probably why it went from days to weeks once the doctors had all conferred," he said.

Yeah, just rest. THis sounds way too much like his hamstring last year. And Beltran's knee. If he has to rest for 2 months we may not see him until June. And that's assuming this resolves itself with rest - like all the injuries last year were supposed to.

Metstradamus' sense of sarcasm just made his head explode.
I don’t mind a young starter getting his feet wet in the bullpen. Earl Weaver used to do it all the time. Bobby V would chortle “everyone’s a reliever” in September. Santana started in the pen. The Rangers are doing it to Neftali Perez. The Mets aren’t reinventing the wheel here.
(The Joba situation got fucked up because the Yanks mixed up the Weaver reliever with the Verducci effect and came up with Joba rules. Even intuitively, it’s a stupid hybrid. )
The problem is two-fold: 1. Mejia has only spent 2 seconds in AA, 2. Jerry is batshit crazy. 2a. Warthen has no idea what he’s doing. 2c. Mets suck.

Jason Bay is seriously considering whether the jersey he got from the Rangers is a solicitation for a try out. Surely it can't be any worse than what he's gotten himself into with the Mets.
I don't feel sorry for Bay. He knew what he was signing up for. And he's getting paid a ton. Let him suffer with the rest of them.

The problem is that we've never adequately stretched Mejia's arm out as a starter. What is the most innings he's ever thrown in a season? We'll have to start ALL OVER if we make him a reliever. He'll never build his arm up correctly to be a starter. Never.

To me the whole Mejia thing boils down to he has the ability to be a a very special starting pitcher. Those don't grow on trees. Try to get one in FA and it will cost you. With Mejia being relatively cheap for the next years why in God's name would you even try to ruin that to be your 8th inning guy.

From Ted Berg:

You can point to recent examples of now-successful starting pitchers who broke into the Majors as relievers, like Johan Santana and Adam Wainwright, but the situations are not the same. Wainwright had excellent breaking stuff in 2006 and enough confidence in it to throw it in big spots — Mets fans know that all too well.
Santana spent 2000 mostly getting torched in the Twins’ bullpen because he had been a Rule 5 draft pick. He didn’t become the Johan Santana we know until 2002, after a stint in the Minors. From the Wikipedia:
In 2002, the Twins sent Santana to the minors for 2 months to work almost exclusively on perfecting his changeup. He did this for 10 starts and came back up to the majors with a terrific changeup to complement his very good fastball. While in the minors, pitching coach Bobby Cuellar made Santana throw at least one changeup to every batter. According to Cuellar, Santana would sometimes throw 20 in a row during games.
You can’t throw 20 changeups in a row in Major League games. It would be very, very bad.
Naturally, Mejia is not Santana, just like he’s not Wainwright and he’s not Rivera and he’s not Doc Gooden, either. I’m as excited as everyone else is about his potential, which is why I’m hoping that, for once, the Mets can be patient and allow his ability to match his hype before they elevate him to the big-league level.

Right, so by the generally accepted +30 standard the dude needs at least TWO more seasons of, um, seasoning in the minors before he is ready to take on a full season load.
the problem is we're sacrificing the development of a potential future ace pitcher to be a BP pitcher for a team that IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH this season

Daniel Stegall's professional baseball career may be over, but his athletic career is definitely not.
Stegall was released by the New York Mets two weeks ago after four seasons in the minor leagues. Stegall batted .219 with six home runs in 245 games over four seasons, all on the Class A level or below.
"Baseball is what I'm in love with," Stegall said. "It's tough, but I gave it my best shot. It didn't work out."
Stegall has been in Greenwood recently, working out and getting ready to resume a football career.
"There's nothing official, but there's a couple of schools I'm talking with," Stegall said. "This is just my second week of working out and trying to get back into football shape."
Stegall did pitch for the Florida Marlin scouts last week.
"I threw a (bullpen session), but I don't think pitching is what I want to do," Stegall said.
In 2006, Stegall became the first football player from Greenwood to sign a Division I football national letter of intent.
He capped a record-breaking career for the Bulldogs with a state championship in 2005, but Stegall decided not to play football for the Miami Hurricanes after being selected in the seventh round of the June draft by the Mets.
Stegall, who will turn 22 in September, is now set to follow a familiar path for many baseball players once that sport is over, returning to college to pursue football. Among the schools that Stegall has already talked to are Ohio University, Mississippi State, Auburn and Arkansas.
During his junior season at Greenwood, Stegall operated Greenwood's Spread offense almost flawlessly by throwing for 2,065 yards and running for 1,022. He was the first quarterback in state history in a big-school classification to pass for more than 2,000 yards and run for more than 1,000 in the same season. In 2005, he duplicated the feat with 2,546 passing yards and 1,475 rushing yards.
In his career, he accounted for 97 offensive touchdowns and also returned an interception for a touchdown during his junior season.
Stegall does not plan on returning to college until the 2010-11 season. That allows him to take advantage of a clause in his baseball contract that provides for eight semesters of college to be paid for by the Mets.
"I'm watching video, reading coverages and working out," Stegall said. "That's what the next few months are for.
