almost every player on the marlins has substantially better numbers vs the mets compared to their overall numbers

We are accounting for the fact that the nats were poor. They won 40% of their games. The Mets won 50% in that same time period. That's how much better the Mets were compared to the Nats.

Lets say you had two .500 teams..........you'd expect to win 50% and they would win 50%. Here, the mets are clearly better so you'd expect them to win more than 50%......how much more? Well according to the formula it would be about 60%.

In reality the mets won about 56% of those games. Less than expected, but not by a great margin.


If your making the argument this should be done year by year I dont think you can do it that way since your given such a small sample to work with.
I think your wanting to say ok in 2007 the mets win pct was ____ and nats was ______ how much difference is there between the actual and expected in that year? Then 2008, then 2009 and so on.....I think in the end you'll have the same conclusion I drew. Its just given the few amount of games per season, some seasons will look way over the expected amount and some way below....but overall u get the same answer. Once the sample size increases, the closer your going to get to 60%.



Athena is right tho. The reason people feel like they had our number is recent history.....ie last two years.....they have. There's no debating that. But then it goes back to saying anything can happen in small samples.
