Shameless plug time! Just wanted to point out that the Amazin' Avenue Annual is here and ready for download. Eric and I have been working ridiculously hard on this baby, and it features contributions from many writers across Metsland and beyond, not to mention an awesome foreword by Tim Marchman. It's an honest-to-God book with 340 pages of content. And here's the best part: it's absolutely free. The PDF is completely free to download here (http://www.amazinavenueannual.com/), and we'll have Kindle and print editions available for purchase (at cost) next week for those who don't like reading off computers (like me).

Word came out yesterday that Billy Wagner and Fred Wilpon had a mutual understanding in place that the Mets would not pick up Wagner's option because Wagner wanted to go to a team that would let him be a Closer. If Wagner's number 1 concern was recording saves why didn't the Mets hang on to him and offer him arbitration knowing that he would decline so that he could sign elsewhere and save games? Basically trading 2 high draft picks (first and sandwich round) for Chris Carter (the not good one) has to be one of the worst decisions of 2009, right?
Klaw
(12:03 PM)
Let's just get right into it. Yes, it's one of the worst decisions of 2009 and one of the worst related to the draft since the Giants signed Michael Tucker..

Trust me, I am no fan of the Mets' incompetence, but aren't you ignoring the $2-3M the Mets saved by passing Wagner to the Sox? The 2 draft picks are probably still worth the money, but it does make it a little more understandable.
Klaw
(12:15 PM)
A team in New York playing in a brand new taxpayer-funded-boondoggle stadium should not be economizing by taking $2 million instead of two picks. They should be using the picks to sign top prospects who fell because of signability..

It's a given you have a vendetta against the Phillies but could it be possible that J.A Happ just knows how to pitch? Numbers don't tell everything. If numbers did the Dodgers would have beat the Phillies in the NLCS last year....like you predicted.
Klaw
(12:50 PM)
Actually, I picked the Phillies to win that series. And Tom Tango just wrote a piece the other day on Fangraphs further debunking the myth of Happ just having some sort of magic or mojo or The Force that makes him better than your typical no-stuff-can't-miss-a-bat fifth starter. So, in conclusion, you fail the chat.

The mets have a major personality flaw.....they always want to appear to be the good guy. Do nothing to upset anyone. ie. Selig ( don't go over slot)...Wagner make your departing players happy ( at the expense of the team.) They would rather look like good guys ( in their eyes) not realizing they look like morons in the eyes of the fan base....and media.

IKE totally changed his swing and he's real quick through the zone. He still drops his hands a little before swinging but he DESTROYS the fastballs. He still gets pwned most of the time with the offspeed stuff but hopefully he continues to improve in that regard. I'm excited about him.

Hi Shea! He was pretty mad at himself about that so I think he's one of those guys who really takes pride in his defense. He seems to have the physical tools to be good over there. He's more of a natural athlete than Danny Boy certainly.

Thyroid imbalance is an unlikely disease for an athlete. I suppose the test they’re doing is to look for nodules, which would require an operation. Otherwise, it can be controlled with diet and medication.

Of course none of us know what exactly Jose has...
There are three treatments for hyperthyroidism. Antithyroid medication and radioactive iodine are the ones doctors use most often. In rare cases, surgery may be done. Even if your symptoms are not bothering you, you still need treatment, because hyperthyroidism can lead to more serious problems.

Jose being an athlete would actually have no bearing on the likelihood. It has nothing to do with underlying health. But men don't develop it anywhere near as often as women. So his odds are decent for that reason.
They could be looking for nodules, or his thyroid levels could be off. If he's too low (hypo), that's very easy to treat. They just supplement with a synthetic hormone.
If it is too high (hyper) the three choices that Shea mention are correct. Meds can be difficult to calibrate properly and he might not feel quite like himself for a long time. It can take some time to get it right. Radio iodine is easy-peasy (but he could well need meds for a long time afterwards).
Either way, it's a very common condition, and very controllable. But if it has to be one of them, I'm hoping for hypo.

Athena, I believe it is hyper...not hypo ( keith said he takes medication for hypo condition). Could be wrong, biut I think they said hyper for Reyes.
Oh. Well that sucks. Hope it is a mild case. At best, he'll hardly notice it once he starts the meds. But the extreme case has implications for flexibility, muscle mass, heat tolerance and a lot of other little things. That would be a pretty bad case, though. And the meds would control it once they figured out the right dosage.

Yep, Carroll says hyper as well. Which made sense since Hosey hasn't gained weight.
The Mets will treat it with leeches.

Of course, if he is not feeling any symptoms and they needed the test to even find it, it can't be all that serious. Small dose of medication should fix him right up.
I hope.

In between the back fields, the team is checking out a collection of minor league free agents, essentially trying out.
They’re not in Mets gear, naturally, with one pitcher actually wearing a Texas Rangers cap.

I might have to make this comment my signature. Or take it Kinko's, blow it up large and use it decorate my kitchen. ;-)
Laveranues Coles wants to finish his career with the New York Jets.
It's an interesting thought. The Jets need help at receiver, and although Coles had a disappointing season with the Cincinnati Bengals, he could be a contributor if he comes at the right price and is willing to be the tertiary option behind Braylon Edwards and Jerricho Cotchery.
The Bengals released the 32-year-old Coles on Thursday. He told Newark Star-Ledger reporter Dave Hutchinson the Jets would "be the first team we call to see if they're interested."
igarashi gives it up
