View Full Version : General Folder or Link Dump

Let's get some feedback. Should we have the general daily discussion ala old MetsGeek in the Link Dumps or in the General Discussion? My instinct is the General Discussion but I also understand the proclivity to aim towards the Link Dumps.
here's another question
i think we're moving away from the automated "link dump" aspect of the dumps....perhaps we come up with a new name?
perhaps we make the general talk thread in the link dumps and make that the place ppl post articles and "links" and keep the member articles to analyses and thought pieces n the such.
I dont know.

I like this. Sort of a combination of both. If there is nothing named "Link Dump" people will show up in General Discussion. If we retain the name LinkDump, even if the function has changed, people will want to be there. So we change the name and keep other Mets related threads for pure baseball talk.
But now I don't know how to vote.

I think that's the intention with the member articles. It's for original stuff, not for posting of links (that's my interpretation). I'm starting to come over to your line of thinking of considering the link dump just a name for what MetsGeek kinda used to run (ie. the place where we spew our general shittalk).

I dont know.
1. we are trained from months (years) on end to understand that "link dump" means a place for general discussion
2. it is the top item on the list and thus easiest to see and select.
i reflexively went to the link dump for the first post and couldn't see the "general discussion" until lunk directed me there. i don't think people care too much about what it is called. however, if you want to make the place for the normal metsgeek conversations just put it at the top of the page.

You're so logical, pj. No wonder we keep you around!
so maybe if we dont have the automated link dump thing anymore....
we use the link dump for ppl to post articles and keep the daily convo thread there
and any thought pieces or analyses or anything that's not a link to a news article can go into 'member articles' or whatever that one is called
and we'll sticky the new daily thread for conversation. everything else will flow free
i dont know
i really need this weekend to come n soon to dive deeeeeeep into this place

i think the wording of the poll is meant to sway people to the general discussion. is lunk channeling his inner Rove?
LOL - where should the GENERAL DISCUSSION THREAD GO?
THE GENERAL DISCUSSION FORUM
or somewhere else
its like a fox news poll

One thing to keep in mind is that you want this to be fairly intuitive for new users. One of the complaints about the old Geek was that most of the users were so entrenched in the community that it had grown a bit insular. I realize there is a desire to keep things 'as they were', but my advice would be to embrace the new forum setup and aim for a compromise of familiarity and functionality.
We also have plenty of flexibility to add new forums, subtract unused forums, etc.

Don't we all have one? I already moved the discussion thread back to link dump. Let's leave it there for now.

Then what might be best is to have a forum listed at the top that, if it's not called Link Dump, is specifically for general daily discussion. Something that'll draw people towards it right away.

Now let's say- hypothetically, of course - that there is a rumor that the Mets will sign Joel Piniero for 2/15. Would that warrant its own thread so people can discuss, argue, and monitor separately?
Or does that stay in the place where we are used to it? In Link Dump/General Discussion?
I would say that having separate topic threads for stuff like that might make the site more accessible to new members. The general discussion is kind of overwhelming (and, I guess, dull if you are new)*. Though I would miss having everything in one easy place.
*Oops, I see that Eric has already made this point. . .

Maybe we have a 'MetsGeek Chat Room' forum, and 'Link Dump' becomes 'Mets News', or whatever.

I agree but, at the same time, we can't throw the baby out with the bathwater. One of the reasons, I think, that we have all become so close IS because of the general thread that we tend to have. Everybody talks to everyone. I think, possibly, as we get used to the new MetsGeek structure, we can learn to branch out. In the mean time, I think it's nice to have a spot to call home.

Something like that sounds logical. So new users know where to look for things and the regulars still have a place to banter. The only trick will be gradually getting everyone to post elsewhere other than the general discussion.

i think the linearity of the old geek was comfortable for people. you didn't need to open several threads to see what was on. if you wanted to catch up, you could go back a few pages or start at #1. alternatively, you could just dive in. this format is going to be different and that is ok with me.

That's where you and Dep (and whomever else) come in. We're going to have to be fairly diligent early on, but I think people will figure it out quickly enough.

Ed in da NEW House!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Me likey so far.
I think ppl are just going to have to double it up sometimes, and there's nothing wrong with that.
I think the forums n threads we can create are VERY IMPORTANT and will foster good, relevant conversation moving forward. any good conversation in the link dumps is basically lost an hour later, and basically, that sucks. a dedicated thead can basically live forever on specific topics.
say you want to shoot the shit on who we should sign to catch or whatever and we're talking about it in the 'link dump'....well maybe whoever brought it up makes a forum topic too on it, it may be a little repetitive at first, but i think its very very important to use dedicated/new threads to discuss certain topics.

Totally agree. I think there will be a lot of "Hey, that's awesome. Go post that in the Mets News forum so everyone can see it!"

Agreed. The trick, I think, is make the switch gradually and seamlessly. We don't want to attract new users at the expense of old users not liking the format.

I think we need to focus on making the sure daily convo thread is there and our "old users" find their way here and are comfortable here and learn how everything works.
THEN we really start focusing on using all the new bells n whistles n thread/forums type format.
like we dont need to focus on that today. today is about everyone finding their way here and not being overwhelmed.
long-term that is definitely the plan. i think by the season's start hopefully everyone will be very comfortable and we'll really be using the shite outta this puppy

Yep, so for now, we should try to make sure there is a daily discussion thread every day like the one I created. Hopefully, as conversations branch out, there will less of a need for it.

There's a little arrow pointing to the right next to the date of the last post on each thread. If you click on that, it goes to the latest post.
