Hey Lunk, I was just about to shut the computer down for the evening when I saw you logged on.

Good news on the home front?

Well I just hope that your weekend finished on a high note.

I also hope you caught all (if not most) of that gold medal game. Not the ending we wanted, but far from disappointing. Team USA played a very strong game against a team that seemed to gain a lot of confidence after that loss to our boys. I honestly didn't think they would come away with gold yesterday, but they almost pulled it off. Going home with silver after a game like that against an opponent as tough as Canada is nothing to be ashamed of.

Have a good night, bro.

Imagine if more than the part of the US that borders Canada actually cared about hockey.

Painful loss for the US, but you hope the youthful core will maintain an otherwise fine performance in 2014 assuming NHL players are there. There's pretty much only 3 position players (Langenbrunner, Drury and Rafalski) and back up goalie Tim Thomas that are going to be ruled out of the next games due to age. There's a potential bumper crop of talent that won the world junior tournament with names like Derek Stepan, Chris Kreider and Cam Fowler looking to emerge at the pro level within 4 years time. Even if the present is a little dreary, the future for US hockey looks very bright.

A "final" thought on the gold medal game.

It was not the most important hockey game ever. Not for the either country. Maybe for Canada in Olympic competition, but even 2002 would give it a run for it's money because that win ended a long gold medal drought for Canada. For the US, obviously 1980 tops the list. For Canada the 1972 Summit Series and the 1987 Canada Cup are bigger wins, especially since those tournaments did originally feature the NHL pros vs the Red Army teams.

While Canada might be the biggest rival for the US, the US is not Canada's biggest rival. That would be Russia.

Still a great game, and I like I said, I hope this performance is a sign of things to come in 2014.

According to Newsday's Ken Davidoff, the Mets are interested in reliever Kiko Calero but are only willing to offer him a minor league contract.

The Mets, along with baseball's other 29 teams, have real concerns about Calero's recent run of injuries. The 35-year-old unloaded an impressive 1.95 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 69/30 K/BB ratio in 60 innings for the Marlins last season, but he may have to settle for a minors deal and spring camp invite.

Mornin' kiddies.

Incredible performance for Team North America these last three weeks. Canada doesn't "Own The Podium", but they come away with a very impressive overall lead in the gold standings as well as gold in both hockey tournaments. America takes the overall medal lead and dominates in events that they typically don't even bother to show up in.

Not bad for a couple of countries that historically don't do all that well in the Winter Games.

Kipper definitely not getting on any lists because of his terrible game against the US. Luongo while not spectacular did provide enough steady play to help Canada win gold. You could easily make a case for Hiller.

The Finns didn't have much of a stand out player. Gaborik scored key goals for Slovakia, even in losing efforts. You could also make a case for Langenbrunner. I liked a lot of the US efforts as the tournament moved on. In particular Joe Pavelski.

I shuddered to put Crosby on the list, but he did score at the important times. Iginla did most of his damage in the blowout games.

Stepped it in the bronze game. He had a decent tournament but I'd still give the nod to Gaborik. Just imagine if he was able to play the 3rd against Canada, it could have been him hitting the net rather than Demitra missing it.

I said the exact same thing the other day. Nothing will change.

No hockey won't take over as the most popular sport. And the NHL has shot itself in the foot with bad tv contracts and poor marketing campaigns for its best players. But what I hope for is that in 2014, assuming the NHL participates and the US team does well again, is that the sport starts to take a foothold in the national conscience.

It will always be a niche sport to some extent. As a significant bulk of the population rests far away from areas that support the game naturally and the high cost that's incurred from playing the sport even at the basic level, it will only reach a limited amount of the population.

For public realtions or something? Not sure I understand.

Well, part of it is the Olympic trials. The country's teams play something like 30 games to decide who gets to go to the Olympics. In the case of teams like Canada, the US, Russia, and Sweden, they don't get the players they're actually going to have. The US uses mostly minor leaguers, for instance, and in some cases upper level college players. I think the IOC would like the NHL to be less stringent on releasing players to go play international games.

Well, some teams get in and some times don't make it. On occasion, you'll see teams from Austria, France, Kazakhstan, and others manage to make it in. It's typically the usual suspects though.

Breaking: Islanders goaltender Rick DiPietro out indefinitely with knee swelling
18 m ago By Katie Strang

UPDATE: Rick DiPietro is out indefinitely with swelling in his knee. He will not play tomorrow.

DiPietro, who began rehabbing a surgically-repaired knee back in August, did not practice Monday afternoon. Instead he paid a visit to the doctor to get his leg checked up.

At this point, the assumption is that the swelling is his left knee, but that has yet to be confirmed.

I'm thinking it's for another trade. The Pens still need wingers. I doubt they move Gonchar because he's so valuable to their blueline and trading Letang wouldn't be too smart. Maybe they feel they need better depth because they did lose Scuderi and Gill, but Leopold doesn't play the same style game as those 2. I wonder if they'll make a move to get Frolov from LA who doesn't appear to be part of their future and is an upcoming FA.

On Friday night, the Saints' staff at the combine gathered in a private room at St. Elmo Steakhouse, an 108-year-old Indy landmark, for a final celebratory nod to the Super Bowl win over the Colts. This is a group that likes its wine, and likes to have fun.
At the restaurant, word passed that Dallas owner Jerry Jones would have his Dallas group in this exact room Saturday night for a team dinner. Jones had even phoned ahead, according to a waiter, to make sure a magnum of a wine he loved, Caymus Special Selection cabernet sauvignon, was ready to be served at dinner.
Sean Payton told the waiter he'd like to have that wine, too. The waiter told him: Sorry, sir. We have only one bottle left, and it's reserved for Mr. Jones.
Payton said he'd like to have the bottle nonetheless. I assume there was much angst on the part of the wait staff at that point. My God! Who do we piss off? One of the most powerful owners in the NFL, or the coach who's the toast of the NFL, the coach who just won the Super Bowl?
Here came the bottle of Caymus Special Selection, and the Saints' party drained it.
But drinking Jones' wine wasn't enough. Payton gave the waiter some instructions, took out his pen ... and, well, the Cowboys party found at the middle of their table the next evening an empty magnum of Caymus Special Selection cabernet sauvignon, with these words hand-written on the fancy label:
WHO DAT!
World Champions XLIV
Sean Payton
That's the kind of thing Jones will get a big laugh out of. And remember.

Opening day is a month away, and the Mets are already falling apart.

A giant piece of the marquee Citi Field sign came crashing down on Jan. 25 -- more evidence for beleaguered Met fans that the sky really is falling.

The cover of the sign's C flew off and plummeted nearly 200 feet to the empty seats below, sources said. The sign towers over center field and is the centerpiece of the year-old stadium.

Photos provided to The Post show the 15-foot-long, 35-pound acrylic sheeting landed in a field-level section to the right of the sign.

"Once it hit the ground, it shattered into a bunch of pieces," a team insider told The Post.

The Mets blamed the mishap on heavy rain and gusty winds.

Using language better suited to describe an Oliver Perez home-run pitch, team officials said the sign "fluttered to the ground."

But the source said the C plunged faster than the team's position in the standings last season.

"This thing was falling from on top of the stadium," the source said. "Something falling from that height, it will definitely split your head."

The sign was built by Broadway National. It rests above the center-field scoreboard and giant video screen. The covers, or lenses, on the letters conceal the illuminated sign's wiring.

"A baseball game would not take place under such weather conditions," the team said.

"No one was harmed, and no one was in any danger. The lens is in the process of being remade, and we are checking similarly constructed signs throughout the ballpark."

The falling sign is the latest in a string of woes to hit the Mets' $850 million ballpark.

The Post reported in September that several luxury suites -- including Jerry Seinfeld's -- were plagued by leaks and mold. Repairmen had to tear down walls in the suites, which rent for $250,000 to $500,000 a season, to fix a problem pipe.

Other breakdowns at the stadium included falling pieces of concrete, flooding in outfield seats, faulty electrical wiring and shoddy tile work.

The flooding occurred in a section called Mo's Zone, after the sporting-goods store Modell's, because drains were clogged. The backup was caused by 20 feet of pipe collapsing in the bullpen.

At the time, Met management dismissed the problems as mainly cosmetic and part of a "punch list of items" that all new structures face.

The stadium was financed largely by nearly $700 million in tax-free bonds issued by the city and the state. Under the deal, the Mets pay off the bonds but save on interest and taxes. The city's Economic Development Corp. also gave the team $91 million to build it.

The Post reported in January that at least $52 million of that public funding went to seven subcontractors that either had connections to the mob or were on a list of firms with which the city avoids doing business.

Inspired by Jason Bay's arrival, the U.S.-Canada hockey rivalry is in full force in the Mets clubhouse. Players are gathering this afternoon at a nearby establishment to watch. If Canada wins, Jeff Francoeur foots the bill. If the U.S. wins, Bay pays. And, if it's a tie after regulation, it's Alex Cora on the hook. There's only one other Canadian in the clubhouse, Shawn Bowman, and he's not in position to share responsibility for a Team Canada loss. "I'd have to call mom for a loan," Bowman said.

This is what is so baffling. You love watching Olympic Hockey...but you can't see the problem with the league shutting down for 2 weeks? A team is a on a winning streak. It's in a bad city for hockey say Atlanta. The team is riding that winning streak into a slight bump in attendance. Exponentially more interest on tv.

Then the league goes on hold for 2.5 weeks. You don't see a problem? What about all the road venues excited for Sidney Crosby or Alexander Ovechkin to come to town to boost ticket sales and the guy gets injured 2.5 continents away, while the majority of America is either asleep or just waking up.

The NHL doesn't get anything out of Sochi. They did out of Vancouver because it was on our continent and people were watching.

This is high risk low reward in 2014.

I don't think the league shutting down for 2 weeks every 4 years has hurt the financially struggling teams. Even if the next games are played in a time zone that doesn't quite match up with the US audience's prime time they will still get decent exposure to the sport because people tune in to the Olympics regardless of the time and they can put the games on tape delay.

The middle of February is the dog days of the NHL anyway. I think anyone that's paying attention the games at that time of the year is already a pretty hardcore fan. The potential to capture new fans via the Olympic outweighs the schedule stoppage.

people are gonna treat it like the NHL has to let them go (its the right thing to do oh its the olympics)...but the NHL doesnt have to do a god damn thing and i dont blame them just from a pure business decision, why shouldnt they get something out of it. (i dont buy the added exposure angle)

it will surely be an interesting negotiation

just make omar minaya the NHL commissioner, he'll FORCE players to go haha. "Wait, its like the WBC? oh shit, let everyone go!"

If Omar is the NHL Commissioner what does that make SOF? NHL's Cardinal Richelieu? LOL.

Keith Hernandez was also a guest of Francesa today, and he said he feels the vibe on camp is much, much better than in years past, due in large part to Jeff Francoeur.

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Darryl Strawberry initiated the conversation from across the clubhouse Monday, too excited by what he had witnessed to wait for a more private dialogue.

"You know how something happens every spring that no one expects?" Strawberry said. "I already know what it is this year ... that Mejia kid. Did you see him today?"

Everyone had the opportunity to see Jenrry Mejia, the 20-year-old right-hander who can't be ignored, even in a camp with 29 other pitchers. But Strawberry saw something no one else in the Mets camp could see. Fifteen years after the first one, he saw Mariano Rivera in the pre-natal stage. And he couldn't help himself. Few people understand as well as Strawberry how unfair and dangerous comparisons and stated expectations can be. But there he was, comparing a 20-year-old with 210 innings as a professional to an all-time bullpen deity.

"I know, I know," Strawberry said. "But did you see his ball move? Awesome. That ball cuts. It's natural, too." Then he lowered his voice, lest he share his observation with the world. "I honestly can say I've never seen anyone else throw a pitch like that except for Mariano."

Mejia had thrown two innings in an intrasquad game. Strawberry was watching from the third-base dugout until he moved to a chair behind the protective screen 15 feet from the plate. Once he took a seat there, Strawberry turned to manager Jerry Manuel and asked, "Do you know what you have there? I mean, do you realize who that is throwing out there? That's your next closer. That's your Mo Rivera."

Strawberry was unaware that Manuel had drawn parallels between Mejia and Rivera -- the Mets manager had referred to Rivera as "the guy across town" -- on Friday. But no manager this side of Davey Johnson and Sparky Anderson would be so comfortable raving about a young, untested pitcher the way Strawberry did.

"He could do the same things Mariano's done with that pitch -- it moves so much," Strawberry said. "I mean, do they know what they have here?"

Mejia struck out two and allowed one hit in his first game appearance at the most challenging level spring games can present.

"Even the pitches that weren't where he wanted them," Strawberry said, "they moved like not many others. He's got a natural gift. What an arm!".

If you could contract and re-align the NHL how would you do it? One proposal is this:

I'd go with a 24 team league. Essentially consolidate the Florida market, 1 team. Eliminate 2 of 3 of Atlanta/Nashville/Carolina (most likely ATL and NSH), that's 3 teams gone. Adios Phoenix, 4 teams gone. Good bye Columbus, 5 teams. And as much as I would miss the rivalry, see you's Islanders, 6 teams.

12 teams in each conference, 6 teams in each division.

NYR/NJD/PHI/PIT/WSH/FLA (reasonably close to the old Patrick Division)
BUF/BOS/MTL/TOR/OTT/CAR (uh, the old Hartford Whalers, essentially the old Adams)
DET/CHI/STL/DAL/MIN/COL (old Norris + a couple)
SJ/LA/ANH/CGY/EDM/VAN (old Smythe + a couple)

6 games vs your division = 30 games
4 games vs your conference = 24 games
Home and home vs opposite conference = 24 games

Start the playoffs the 1st week of April.
