They showed video on SNY last night of the blowtorches. Hysterical! (And not terribly effective, I'm afraid. They needed a LOT more blowtorches if they were going to dry out the whole dirt infield.

MetsWFAN For as many bunts as the Mets try, you think they would be better at it. Practice makes perfect?

Two people are facing criminal charges after a “party game” gone wrong ended in a man’s death.
Authorities said Jimmy Mounts, 27, of Romeoville, was at a garage party in the 2000 block of Waterford in Crest Hill Sept. 25 when he starting offering other guests $5 if they could take a punch from 21-year-old Tiffany Startz, of Joliet.
John A. Powell, 25, who was 5-foot-8 and weighed 140 pounds, took Mounts’ wager and stood before the 5-foot-5, 142-pound Startz, police said.
Witnesses told police Startz swung and hit Powell once in the face. He collected his money from Mounts and continued talking and interacting with others for a few minutes before he collapsed, police said.
He was rushed to Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, where he was pronounced dead in the emergency room at 9:47 p.m.
Will County Coroner Patrick O’Neil said Powell died of a brain hemorrhage caused by blunt-force trauma. Medical reports indicate a vein in Powell’s neck opened up when his head snapped back and led to the brain injury.
“Initially there were conflicting reports from the witnesses about what had happened,” Crest Hill Police Chief Dwayne Wilkerson said. “But further investigation the night of the party found out about the bet.”
Powell was employed by E.H. Lynn Industries. A rapper and recording artist, he was known as “Fatboy” with the group Krazy Killas.
Will County state’s attorney’s spokesman Charles Pelkie said after reviewing the evidence prosecutors decided to charge Mounts and Startz with reckless conduct, a felony that carries penalties of up to three years in prison.
O’Neil last week ruled Powell’s death a homicide, noting on the death certificate he died “as the result of a party game.”
Startz turned herself in to police Dec. 28 before she was released on $10,000 bail. Mounts was arrested Monday and released on $5,000 bail. .

Turner had a very strong minor league career. Turner's minor league numbers are pretty consistently solid, esp since he arrived in Buffalo. In six seasons in the minors, he OPSed .816. Last year, in Buffalo, he OPSed .906 in 78 games. And as Dep noted this am
his minor league numbers when MLE'd become a nice 340+ wOBA
Turner's just never had a chance. He's greater than the sum of his parts, and he ended up DFAed last year because he'd been a necessary callup for injury, but had to be DFAed when the injured player returned.
And if he isn't anything more than he's shown to date, I'll take nine players who OPS in the 800s and get big hits in the clutch.

I don't think so. I think he's made it clear that he doesn't believe in jinxes and does it deliberately to prove there are no such things. It comes across as an "in your face" to the fans, and I think he means it that way, because he thinks fans who believe in jinxes are idiots and he's essentially mocking them.

I'm not sure it's an intentional thing.
I just think that he's such a huge mets fan and he's waiting on one so it's hard for him to not bring it up.
I wouldn't think he's intentional if he made mention of it and let it alone. But he was all over it from beginning of the inning to the end, even the producers were fixating on the boxscore.

lol.
There's a much greater chance he shines in the NBA than busts :).
well kanter tore up the hoop summit
so did dirk!
omg, he's gonna be great!
I don't think so. I think he's made it clear that he doesn't believe in jinxes and does it deliberately to prove there are no such things. It comes across as an "in your face" to the fans, and I think he means it that way, because he thinks fans who believe in jinxes are idiots and he's essentially mocking them.
Hmm i dunno.
I mean I think you gotta be careful saying someone is intentionally doing something.
To me, thats like when people say that "oh player A has no heart"...........how do we really know that to be the case?
I agree he does come off that way, I still don't think it's intentional FU to the fans tho.

It's silly to *not* talk about it. You don't talk *to* the pitcher about a no-no. No reason a fan or play by play guy shouldn't.
I agree.
And I don't feel it was harped on by Gary. It wasn't even mentioned until the 4th/5th inning

Nobody even considers a no-no until the 6th. That's standard baseball procedure.
To be honest,
I'm really shocked that people feel that way about jinxes. Where were ya'll when people were killing me about it? lmao.

People should learn to not believe in jinxes if they don't want it thrown in their face.
This like arguing that people shouldn't be religious if they don't want atheists to remind them how stupid they are for believing in an object they can't prove. It may be so, but you should respect people's differing opinions if you are a public broadcaster.

There was a time in the late 90's we had a run of good starting pitching.......i went into every game thinking we'd get one.
I could be totally wrong but i think there was actually a time we had two 1 hitters in a span of 3 games........against Florida i think.

This is not even remotely analogous to religious tolerance. It's a silly superstition. Gary is paid to report what's happening in the game. Not allowing a hit more than halfway through a game is significant, and if he ignored it because of superstition that'd be silly.

1.) Its very analogous. Religion is just as superstitious as believing in a jinx. Their is no rational basis for believing in either. And there is no way you can prove otherwise.
2.) The point isn't that Gary mentioned it once. Read the posts again. It was that he fixated on it as if he made a deliberate point of challenging the alternative belief.

Turner had a very strong minor league career. Turner's minor league numbers are pretty consistently solid, esp since he arrived in Buffalo. In six seasons in the minors, he OPSed .816. Last year, in Buffalo, he OPSed .906 in 78 games. And as Dep noted this am
PS: STFU Gary.
He's been a pleasant surprise so far, I'm certainly enjoying it. But is he a long term solution at 2B? For better or worse that position has evolved into one where you need the plus defense and a healthy amount of offense. Hoping that they've unearthed a hidden gem to offset a relatively weak developmental system has been what's fucked the Mets over for a while now.

baah gary is paid to say things during the game. what he says is controlled in many ways, so it is not correct to say it is silly to not report significant things. if this was true, every decision made on this team should be reported on the air through the lens of the financial struggles of the principle owners

But there are ways of saying and showing it that do not involve the jinx element. I have seen plenty of no-nos involving other teams, and in no case do the announcers jinx the way Gary does with his statements.

No hits allowed through 5+ innings is a direct happening on the field. To ignore that is to ignore the action of on the field.
Of course, even if it weren't directly related to the field, it can and often should be mentioned. Stuff like Ike and DW's injury and recovery, they get mentioned, and rightly so.
