Slovakia survived a scare last night too. IMO, if the US plays a strong game tonight and on Friday I think they have a shot at the gold medal game. Famous last words of "not to look ahead too much", but neither Finland nor the Czechs look overpowering. I think a tenacious, physical approach from the US would be enough to get both teams off their game.
As for Canada-Russia, in hockey terms I'm much more interested in that game than the US game. Not that I'm over-confident the US will win, but Canada-Russia writes the story for itself on so many levels. I'm really wondering if that extra game that Canada had to play allows them to gain some confidence, work out the kinks that a mish-mashed team inevitably has to work out or if winning a game without really trying has to opposite effect. Remember the letdown Canada had against Switzerland after they destroyed Norway.

A school board in Rhode Island has voted to fire all teachers at a struggling high school, a dramatic and controversial plan aimed at shoring up education in a poverty-ridden school district.
On Tuesday night, the board approved the plan by Frances Gallo, superintendent at Central Falls School District, to discharge 88 teachers at Central Falls High School.
The firings come over the district's concern that teachers refused to spend more time with students to improve test scores.
But a teachers' union spokesman called the firings "drastic" and cited a 21 percent rise in reading scores and a 3 percent hike in math scores in two years.
The terminations will go into effect in the next school year at Central Falls, one of the lowest-performing schools in the state.
Brilliant solution. Because it's so easy to find teachers that WANT to teach in poor school districts.

tenure?
As I said about my friend earlier, it's really hard to will yourself to stay at those schools. Tenure sometimes doesn't even help. It part of the cycle. Bad education, students unruly, teachers don't want to teach there, education gets worse, students get more unruly, more teachers don't want to teach there, ad infinitum.

My college roommate taught in the south bronx for 3 years, 5th or 6th graders. The school loved him. Even the students liked him as a whole. He was the best teacher in the school. He loved his kids and he loved the challenge of trying to put them on a good path. But he got so burned out and had to leave. It destroyed him that he left but he had no choice. he said the worst was on field trips where the kids would beat the crap out of each other. He said the look in some of their eyes when they fought or were angered was haunting.

My cousin taught in Brooklyn for many years, but she burned out. Teaching, in general, is hard work. Teaching in tough environment/low performing schools is brutal. And it must be so frustrating to work your ass off at a job where success is so difficult to quantify. Hard to get recognition for your triumphs, easy to get blamed for things that are out of your control. I imagine that some of those 88 teachers were not good at their jobs and deserved to lose them, but I have zero confidence in the board's ability to make a high quality assessment.

My sister has worked in three different schools since 1986. each one has had reasons for burn out. It was quite successful program but the governor cut it last year.

Yeah. I don't have a lot of expertise in education. (Actually I have none!) But I know that testing just isn't effective enough to be the sole measure of success. It would be wonderful if we could hold everyone accountable for performance in the public schools - and reward them accordingly. But the measurements just don't exist at this time. Instead we end up haranguing people and motivating them to focus on the wrong things.

sorry, I know its ST time but a possible JIYP moment for Jet fans.
.....
The Aso talk to the Jets talk is heating up! The Daily News’s Rich Cimini blogged about the situation last night, a whimsical while level head on the subject.
Today, ESPN’s Adam Schefter floated an item, saying the Raiders would be willing to trade Asomugha. Why? Who knows? They’re the Raiders, so they do strange things, but it has to be a delicious possibility for Jets fans. With Revis and Asomugha on the corners, the Jets would be almost bulletproof in the secondary.
Ah, but there’s something called a contract that could get in the way of that fantasy.
Asomugha has $16.6 million in guarantees coming to him this year, and there’s a funky clause in his deal (which expires after 2011) that would earn him another gazillion dollars if they use the franchise tag on him. Those are major obstacles. Also consider that the Jets appear interested in extending Revis’ contract, which means major bucks. Imagine paying $30 million a year for two cornerbacks.
That said, I still think something could develop between the Jets and the Raiders. A few reasons:
1. The Jets need a cornerback to replace Lito Sheppard, who will be cut soon.
2. Mike Tannenbaum can’t help himself. He can’t sign any big free agents because of the “final eight” rule, so he could try to get his off-season fix by swinging a blockbuster trade.
3. There probably won’t be a cap this year, so they can take on a mega contract or perhaps restructure/extend a mega contract. (Disclaimer: If the league goes back to a cap in 2011 — if there is a 2011 — there will be “transition” rules that could apply, perhaps dissuading the Jets from a deal of this magnitude.)
4. Woody Johnson desperately wants to put a championship team in his new stadium.
It’s a long shot, of course, but my guess is that Mike (Due Diligence) Tannenbaum is sniffing around this situation. We know he’s not afraid of the big deal. A few years back, he tried to land a big-time cornerback, as he was heavily involved in the Champ Bailey trade talks with the Redskins. He didn’t get Champ. Will he try for Nnamdi?

Predictions for today's games:
US 4 Swiss 1
Russia 3 Canada 2
Finland 2 Czech Rep 0
Sweden 2 Slovakia 1
I think the match ups of elite teams tend to be low scoring given the quality of the defense and goaltending. It’s important that the US scores first so it forces the Swiss to open up.
It will be curious to see how the Canadian D holds up against the Russian top 6. They haven’t been tested that hard in the tournament. Even if the US scored 4 (not counting the empty netter) against Canada, that was more Brodeur’s doing than the D.
A diminished or absent Jagr is a big blow to the Czechs. Even if they have other weapons on offense, he’s such an inspirational player for them. I also think the Finns never get the respect they’ve earned in these tournaments.
Lundqvist outplays Halak. Slovakia’s top forwards continue their inconsistent production.
More of a coincidence than anything else, I’m picking all the teams that had a bye to win today.

At the same time, Russia has,kt done well against good defenses. Why? Because if you can match shutdown defensemen against the Ovechkin/Malkin/Semin line, you have a good chance of making it a low scoring game.

Russia played better overall teams than Canada. I also don't discount the idea that the Czechs and Slovaks look at a game against Russia as more than just a preliminary game.
It's tough to tell if the Staal-Crosby-Iginla line really clicked, or just took advantage of a piss poor German team. Kalinin has played pretty well for the Russians. And as much as I can see him getting torched by Crosby, I can see Ovechkin making Pronger look like a traffic cone.

I was talking with a coworker yesterday about how goalies of the past 10-15 years are so different than the generations before them because of better pads. Also, goalies used to be the small guy with quick reflexes. Now goalies are taller and among the most athletic players on the team.

Plus, the goaltender mask slowly brought the innovation of the "butterfly goaltender" to the NHL. Before then, you were a stand up goaltender because... well, you didn't want to get hit in the face. Butterfly goaltenders are so good at taking away the bottom of the net.

Are we gonna have to pay attention to the Mets when the ‘lympics are over?
Misalskis got his bell rung pretty badly last night. I couldn’t imagine how goalies played with the Hannibal Lecter mask.
Marty does indeed have two goals. And a goodly number of assists. The dude really enjoys handling the puck, usually with better results than the USA game. The trapezoid is not known as the Brodeur Rule for nothing.

Quote:
Fernando Martinez probably doesn’t have much future in left field for the Mets, so the team will start evaluating him in center.
Jason Bay is signed through at least 2013, with a vesting option for a fifth season, blocking Martinez from taking his natural position anytime soon. In center, Carlos Beltran is signed only through 2011.
“The one thing I was impressed with Fernando last year was he did a play a decent center field last year when we were forced to play him out there,” Jerry Manuel said. “I think center field is probably easier because everything is right in front of you.” .

They're usually used to supplement existing coverage and to pay for exorbitant co-pays. Having an HSA as your soul heath care option isn't the normal set up. Is there an insurance component to her coverage?
Squadron Nye

You should be able to keep her on your plan and then tap the HSA when it doesn't cover something she needs
Lunkwill Fook

From her balance in the HSA.
They negotiate rates with their doctors and for medication.
I saw something about a monthly maintenance fee if the balance in the account is less that $2,500.

High deductible.
If her expenses exceed her balance in the HSA, she is on the hook.
She would bear the brunt of the burden, moreso than under a regular plan.
This is something good for a young person just starting out who is healthy.
Someone who is older has a higher risk of needing more coverage.
That's just me though. I wouldn't do it for those reasons.

most HSAs work like Ed's. You fund them with pre-tax dollars in an approved fund. You can tap the funds for any medical-related costs. Anyone can open a HSA and use it for deductibles, medication or uncovered procedures. So if my health plan only pays 80% of a liver transplant I can get the remaining 20% from the HSA.
After taking a brief look at the brochure you linked to it appears that it's an insurance plan that is centered around an HSA. I don't know anything about that type of plan
